Three-time Super Bowl champion Tedy Bruschi has criticized the Dallas Cowboys for taking a reactive approach to fixing their defensive problems. His comments followed the team’s decision to hire veteran coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant.
Dallas has struggled defensively through the opening weeks of the 2026 NFL season. The Cowboys brought in Pettine to support first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker after the unit’s performances raised serious concerns.

Speaking on ESPN, Bruschi questioned whether Dallas could turn its defense around this season. He acknowledged that the campaign remains young but expressed doubts about the team’s ability to correct its problems.
“Part of me wants to say no. This isn’t salvageable from the things that I’ve seen from week one to week six,” Bruschi said.
The former New England Patriots linebacker then delivered a blunt assessment of Dallas’ organizational decisions.
“But the Dallas Cowboys are the most reactive organization there is,” he added. “I mean, they see a problem, they react. The best organizations are proactive.”
Bruschi questioned why the Cowboys did not anticipate the challenges facing Parker before the season began. At 34, Parker has limited experience compared with many veteran defensive coordinators.
Mike Pettine hire raises questions about Cowboys’ planning
Dallas hired Pettine to provide experience and guidance as the defense struggles to find consistency. Pettine previously coordinated defenses for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Green Bay Packers.
He also served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2014 to 2015. His experience could help Parker adjust the scheme and improve communication across the defensive unit.
However, Bruschi believes the timing of the appointment raises concerns about Dallas’ planning.
“How they didn’t see the problem of hiring Christian Parker with that entire staff is beyond me,” he said.

Bruschi also questioned how much Pettine could accomplish after the defense had already struggled for several weeks. “So now they bring a Mike Pettine in there, which is great, but this is after all the problems,” Bruschi said. “I don’t know how he fixes any of these problems.”
The Cowboys need immediate improvement, particularly against the run and in generating pressure. Pettine’s experience offers a potential solution, but his arrival cannot guarantee a turnaround.
Dallas must now show that its latest coaching adjustment can produce tangible results rather than another temporary response to a growing problem.
