Uruguay Teen Gets 6 Years for 5 Killings

URUGUAY · CRIME

A Uruguay teen aged 17 was sentenced on Tuesday 20 October 2026 to six years in a youth detention institute for five killings in the El Monarca district of Montevideo. He admitted his part under an agreement with prosecutors, the Fiscalía General de la Nación, which is Uruguay’s prosecution service, and was found responsible for five aggravated homicides.

For US readers the case matters because Uruguay draws American retirees, remote workers and investors, so its security trend counts beyond one courtroom. The Interior Ministry published its third-quarter crime figures the same day, and they show 111 killings from July to September, up 20.7% on a year earlier.

What the Uruguay Teen Admitted

The Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office of Montevideo, third shift, held the 17-year-old responsible for five homicides classed as especially aggravated, the Interior Ministry said. The aggravating factors were payment or a promise of reward, and repeat offending, and each death was counted as a separate offence.

The case closed through a simplified procedure agreed by the parties, and the teenager admitted responsibility before the court, Montevideo Portal reported. He will serve all six years at the National Institute for Adolescent Social Inclusion, known as INISA, because he was a minor at the time.

Subrayado noted that Uruguayan law sets a ten-year maximum for minors. The ministry release does not name him, and we do not name minors.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to prosecutors, four men arrived on two motorbikes on the morning of 10 July at a house on the corner of Calle 7 and Calle Central in El Monarca. They wore work clothes with reflective strips and helmets, climbed the perimeter wall and opened fire.

Some victims were lying down and others were in the kitchen when the shooting began, and the gunmen fled on the same bikes about two minutes later. Four people died at the scene and a fifth died after being taken for medical care.

The dead were three young men aged 18, 18 and 28, a woman of 32 and her 14-year-old daughter. Montevideo Portal and Subrayado described the three men as brothers, and Subrayado said they had criminal records.

Prosecutors say the attack grew out of a quarrel a week earlier between one victim and a man from the neighbourhood. Montevideo Portal, citing police sources, reported that the family had moved to El Monarca after earlier conflicts in Villa Española.

How Investigators Found the Teen

Homicide detectives from the ministry’s General Directorate of Complex Crimes arrested the teenager on Thursday 27 August 2026 during raids in the La Chancha district. Subrayado reported that he was charged the same day and has been held at INISA since.

Prosecutors say CCTV images, ballistic and biological tests and autopsies helped reconstruct the attackers’ movements before and after the shooting. A mobile phone seized during the raid held messages in which the Uruguay teen acknowledged taking part and said he was paid.

Photographs on the phone also matched the weapons, vehicles and clothing used in the attack, prosecutors said. Prosecutor Raúl Iglesias and deputy prosecutor Virginia Gandós led the case, working with the homicide prosecutor’s office.

Uruguay Killings Rise 20.7% in Third Quarter

The ministry’s statistics unit said Uruguay recorded 111 killings from July to September 2026, 19 more than in the third quarter of 2025. That is a rise of 20.7%, although monthly counts fell from 43 in July and 41 in August to 27 in September.

Infobae, citing ministry statistics, put the total for the first nine months at 312 killings, up 13.5% on 2025. It reported that 73.3% of killings involved firearms, the highest share since the series began in 2013 according to data first reported by El País, and that 53.8% were disputes between criminals.

Other crime moved the other way, with 67,930 reported offences in the quarter, 2% fewer than a year earlier. Robberies fell 2.1% to 3,650 and extortion cases fell 35% to 93.

Firearm injuries rose to 320 in the quarter from 250 a year earlier, the ministry said. Killings of people under 18 held steady at eight in the quarter, though Infobae put the nine-month total at 18, up 28.6%.

What It Means for You

The ministry’s figures show property crime falling while killings rise, and Infobae said more than half of this year’s killings were disputes between criminals. That pattern is not a safety assessment for visitors, so US travellers should check the State Department’s current advice for Uruguay before booking.

Investors can note that the case moved from arrest to sentence in 54 days, through an agreed simplified procedure. Readers weighing a move can start with our Montevideo expat city guide.

What Is Not Known

VTV Noticias reported on 28 August that police had reportedly identified three other suspected attackers and the person who allegedly paid, but none of the sources we opened reports an arrest or charge against them. Who paid for the attack is not established in court, because the Uruguay teen’s account of payment comes from messages on his phone.

The ministry release does not explain what lies behind the rise in killings beyond the share tied to disputes between criminal groups. Infobae said the ministry acknowledged that this year’s homicide figures are less favourable than 2025’s.

The nine-month total of 312, the firearm share and the motive shares do not appear in the ministry press release, so they rest on Infobae. The next quarterly update will show whether the fall in monthly killings in September holds.
