Sivasagar, Oct 24: All Assam SC Students’ Union and Asom Chatra Yuva Sanmilan undertook a long march campaign to Dispur from Sivasagar in protest against alleged failure of the government to compensate the flood-affected people of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat district.
The student bodies will submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Janata Bhawan demanding at least Rs 10 lakh compensation to each family affected by the devastating flood on July 19, adequate compensation for the infrastructure damage in the three districts, and a total ban on illegal quarrying of coal, stone and sand from the river bed of Dikhow river near Assam-Nagaland border areas, and transit of the same through Assam.
Parasjyoti Das, president of SC Students’ Union, told the media on Friday that the State government failed miserably in providing relief to the affected people of the three districts.
He added that the Central Government has shown an indifferent attitude toward the State’s people by not sending any senior leader and by not announcing a relief package so far.
Das said they have undertaken the long march to Dispur to draw the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP leadership towards the plight of flood-affected people.
The march comes amid an ongoing dispute over the distribution of flood relief in Sivasagar.
Earlier, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi ended a 316-hour sit-in protest after the State government assured an additional Rs 4.6 crore in relief for 3,068 flood-affected people. The protest had highlighted grievances over the exclusion of affected families from relief assistance.
Meanwhile, Assam is set to receive Rs 843 crore under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the 2026-27 financial year, following the Centre’s review of the norms governing assistance under the SDRF and the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
The allocation comprises Rs 758.70 crore in central assistance and Rs 84.30 crore as the State’s share, with the first instalment of central assistance amounting to Rs 379.35 crore.
The student bodies’ demands come as the debate over compensation for flood damage continues, with affected communities seeking adequate assistance for damaged homes, infrastructure and livelihoods.
