The state is reportedly set to add two more motor vehicle charges against controversial North West Suliman Carrim.
He is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court, Limpopo, on Thursday.
Carrim was arrested on October 15 at the OR Tambo International Airport while preparing to board an international flight.
He was subsequently denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court after prosecutors argued that he posed a flight risk.
The main charge was that he failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission.
During the bail proceedings, the State raised concerns about Carrim’s planned trip to Saudi Arabia via Dubai and the five large bags he was allegedly carrying, which were said to contain snacks.
Prosecutors described the luggage as “voluminous”, arguing that its quantity raised questions about whether Carrim intended to return to South Africa.
His lawyers disputed the suggestion that he planned to flee, telling the court that he was travelling with his wife to attend a religious event.
The reported additional charges bring renewed focus to the allegations against Carrim.
However, details of the alleged vehicle thefts, including the vehicles involved and the evidence underpinning the charges, have not yet been provided.
IOL has sent questions to the police seeking confirmation of the reported charges and further details.
This is a developing story.
