The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded visa applicants that application fees are non-refundable, regardless of whether their requests are approved or rejected.
The mission issued the clarification in a post on its official X account on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, addressing a misconception that applicants whose visa requests are denied are entitled to recover the money paid during the application process.
According to the mission, the fee covers the processing of a visa application and does not guarantee that the applicant will receive permission to enter the United States.
It explained that the payment covers the administrative process required to review an application and reach a final decision, irrespective of the outcome.
The mission stated: “MYTH: If a U.S. visa application is refused, the applicant receives a refund.
“FACT: The fee paid is an application processing fee, not a payment for a visa to be issued.”
US Visa Fees Remain Non-Refundable
The clarification is consistent with the United States Department of State’s visa application guidelines, which stipulate that the fees paid for processing applications cannot be refunded.
The policy means that applicants who are denied visas cannot reclaim their application fees simply because their requests were unsuccessful.

The payment covers the cost of processing the application rather than the purchase of a visa, which remains subject to the outcome of the assessment.
Rejected Applicants Must Pay Again To Reapply
The US Department of State also explains that applicants whose visa applications are refused under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act must pay a new application fee if they choose to apply again.
Section 214(b) generally applies to non-immigrant visa applicants who fail to establish their eligibility for the visa category or overcome the legal presumption that they intend to immigrate permanently.
Consequently, applicants planning to reapply after a refusal should be prepared to pay the applicable fee again and provide information addressing the reasons for their previous denial.
