Residents of Binari in Kalim-Lamido local government area of Taraba State are on their heels after suspected bandits attacked the community, killing 26 villagers, including women and children, after Juma’a prayers on Friday.
Many others were still missing at the end of the report, while search operations to find the missing persons have been intensified by the locals.
One of the villagers Mallam Abdul Kumbi who spoke to our correspondent on phone said the killings were conducted as a planned attack, stating that the attack was unprovoked as the attackers are not know from the part of the state.
Kumbi said the attackers came from Bauchi through Kompany Asusar road when they attacked the Binary community located on the River Benue bank.
He said the attackers were on motorcycles numbering over 40, while each motorcycle was carrying 3 persons, each with guns and cutlasses.
“The attackers came through Bauchi; they targeted our community at the time Juma’a prayers had finished yesterday. There is a vigilant group office that is very close to the Mosque; they targeted the vigilant group personnel and killed many of them.
They also killed the worshipers who had just come out of the mosque. After the killings, they used their motorcycles and returned through the same road they came from. Kumbi spoke in Hausa.
The spokesperson of the Taraba state police command, Mr Victor Msherizar, confirmed the attack when contacted; he said 10 persons were killed during the bandits’ attack.
He said the command has already deployed its personnel to flush out the attackers; he further disclosed that calm has returned to the community while security agents are on standby to contain any security threat.
