Croatia will become the setting for the first international adaptation of the popular BBC crime drama Death in Paradise, with filming planned on the Adriatic island of Brač in spring 2027.
The new Croatian-language series, titled Ubojstvo u raju (Murder in Paradise), will consist of six 60-minute episodes and is being developed for Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT).
The announcement was made by BBC Studios chief executive and chief creative officer Zai Bennett at the MIPCOM television industry event.
The original British series, produced by Red Planet Pictures for the BBC, combines murder mysteries with the setting of a fictional Caribbean island. It has reached audiences in more than 230 territories worldwide.
The Croatian adaptation will retain the crime-drama format while introducing characters and stories rooted in life on an Adriatic island.
The fictional community will be set on Brač, with production planned in and around Supetar, the island’s main town.
Croatian production company CGM Films will produce the series for HRT’s main television channel. Producers Bruno Mustić and Ivan Lovreček, who have worked together on the Croatian adaptation Sram, are leading the project, with Jelena Gavrilović joining as director.
The scripts will be written by Sonja Tarokić and Valentina Batalić, while Maja Fišter will serve as commissioning editor for HRT.
The original Death in Paradise premiered in the UK in 2011 and has since become an established international television franchise. Its success has also led to spin-offs, including Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise.
For Croatia, the production brings an internationally recognised television format to an island already known for its coastal scenery and tourism. The series could also introduce Brač to viewers who have not previously visited Croatia.
However, filming is not scheduled to begin until spring 2027, and further details about casting and the release date have yet to be announced.
