Siri AI, personalized experiences, and privacy protections strengthen Apple's connected home ecosystem.
Apple is taking another step toward a connected home ecosystem with HomeView. It is a smart home display designed to bring device controls, personal information, and selected apps into one place. However, the device’s approach to third-party apps sets it apart from conventional smart displays.
Instead of offering a dedicated App Store, HomeView relies on compatible apps from a paired iPhone or iPad, following a model similar to Apple CarPlay. The approach could help the tech giant expand HomeView’s capabilities without building an entirely separate app ecosystem. It also reinforces the company’s strategy of connecting its devices and services through a shared software experience.
Apple HomeView Comes with 15 Built-In Apps
HomeView includes 15 built-in Apple apps covering communication, entertainment and everyday tasks. These include Calendar, FaceTime, Find My, Home, Intercom, Messages, Music, Podcasts, Reminders, Safari, Settings, Weather, Alarms, Timers and World Clock.
The gadget has no built-in App Store, so people can’t download and install apps directly on the display. Instead, the company allows third-party audio and video apps to appear on HomeView from a paired iPhone.
These services include Apple Music Classical, Apple News, Apple TV, and Audiobooks, along with other compatible third-party apps like Spotify. This will depend on whether the application is compatible with Apple’s platform.
This system gives individuals access to selected services without needing to develop an entirely new application for the HomeView.

How Apple CarPlay Fits into Picture
Apple’s approach draws on the CarPlay model, which brings compatible iPhone apps to a vehicle’s infotainment screen. The system lets users access supported services through another device’s display rather than relying solely on the phone.
Apple’s developer documentation confirms that CarPlay audio and video apps can also work on HomeView without requiring developers to modify their apps.
The connection could make it easier for developers already supporting CarPlay to extend their services to Apple’s smart home display. Instead of creating a separate app for every device, developers can use existing compatibility to reach users across Apple’s ecosystem.
However, this does not mean every iPhone app will automatically become available on HomeView. Support remains limited to compatible applications and features.
Smart Home Controls Remain at Center
Beyond the app strategy, HomeView is also meant to serve as a central dashboard for all connected devices in the home. Users can access video feeds from HomeView security cameras, turn lights on and off, regulate temperatures, lock doors, and perform other automation tasks in the Apple Home app.
HomeView also supports up to nine video feeds at once, letting users monitor different areas of their home from one screen. The device supports personalized experiences for up to six household members.
According to Apple, its A18 chip includes Secure Enclaves that process camera and microphone feeds in a protected environment, helping the device recognize users without exposing the data to the operating system or Apple.
These features make privacy and individual user experiences, alongside convenience, key parts of HomeView’s design.

What this Means for Apple’s Smart Home Plans
HomeView’s emphasis on iPhone apps reflects Apple’s goal of building its own ecosystem and making all products compatible with one another. The iPhone provides access to apps and personal information, while the smart display serves as an interface for household tasks.
This strategy also has disadvantages. The absence of an independent App Store limits the ability to develop and expand the device’s functionality. HomeView’s value will partly depend on developers’ willingness to join the system and on how effectively their apps work in tandem with HomeView.
People who use Apple devices can benefit from this integration as a convenient way to manage connected accessories, communication, and entertainment services. However, users on multiple platforms will have a more limited experience.
Overall, HomeView’s potential depends largely on how well Apple balances simplicity and flexibility. The smart display follows the CarPlay model and offers various services through apps.
