South African swimming star Pieter Coetzé has earned about R2.67 million in prize money from the 2026 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup, with the chance to increase his earnings at the World Short Course Championships in December.
The 22-year-old secured the overall men's title in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Saturday, 17 October, after winning the 50m backstroke final. His victory put him ahead of Russian rival Egor Kornev in the final standings and earned him a US$100,000 overall-winner bonus (approximately R1.65 million).
According to IOL, Coetzé had already accumulated US$50,000 (approximately R822,795) in prize money and performance bonuses before the final session.
However, Swimming World subsequently confirmed that Coetzé finished the series as champion, while the German swimming federation DSV reported his total World Cup earnings at US$162,000 (approximately R2.67 million).
How Pieter Coetzé built his R2.7m swimming payday
Coetzé's earnings came from his performances across the three World Cup stops in Baku, Tashkent and Astana.
He won all three editions of the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events, collecting three Triple Crowns. Winning the same event at all three stops qualifies a swimmer for an additional US$10,000 bonus (approximately R164,559).
He also set a short-course world record in the 50m backstroke in Tashkent, earning another US$10,000 bonus.
Coetzé finished the overall standings with 172.9 points, ahead of Kornev on 170.7, according to the final results published by Swimming World.
How much more could Pieter Coetzé earn in December?
Coetzé could increase his earnings at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m), scheduled for Beijing from 1 to 6 December 2026.
According to IOL, swimmers who win a Triple Crown at the World Cup and then win the corresponding event at the short-course world championships can qualify for an additional US$15,000 Double Crown bonus (approximately R246,839).
A world championship victory also carries its own US$10,000 prize (approximately R164,559). If Coetzé meets the requirements by winning a corresponding event in Beijing, those two rewards could add US$25,000 (approximately R411,398) to his earnings.
That would take his combined World Cup and potential December prize money to US$187,000 (approximately R3.08 million).
However, the additional amount is conditional. Coetzé has not yet secured those December rewards, and his final earnings will depend on his performances at the championships.

What Coetzé's World Cup triumph means
The South African's campaign has delivered more than a major financial reward. Coetzé has become the fifth South African man to win the overall Swimming World Cup title, joining Ryk Neethling, Cameron van der Burgh, Chad le Clos and Matthew Sates.
His 50m backstroke world record in Tashkent and three-event dominance across the circuit underline the performances behind his earnings.
For now, Coetzé's confirmed World Cup haul stands at US$162,000 (approximately R2.67 million). A successful December campaign could push that figure beyond R3 million.
