Coach Kalani Sitake’s No. 2 BYU Cougars impressed Nick Saban with their win over Notre Dame, and then hit the road to take on the UCF Golden Knights at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The Cougars were stunned by a score of 39-31, suffering their first loss of the season in double-overtime as the Golden Knights overcame tough-luck injury news.
Fans were jubilant after news broke of the Golden Knights’ win as upset mania gripped college football for a second straight week. BYU came into this week ranked number one in the College Football Power Rankings after surging ahead of Notre Dame and the Miami Hurricanes following their huge upset win in Provo, Utah. They weren’t expecting Week 8 to be as difficult as the Notre Dame game going up against a 3-3 UCF team, but the Golden Knights proved to be more than up to the task of beating the visitors on the gridiron as they pulled out all the stops en route to a thrilling victory.
The Cougars were outgained 463-373 on the day as the Golden Knights got 293 yards passing and three touchdowns from unlikely hero Keyone Jenkins at quarterback. Bear Bachmeier attempted to answer back but wasn’t able to get it done in the final period. He finished with 257 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
