What the Paddock Is Waiting On This Week: Antonelli’s Austin Title Equation, a Two-Point MotoGP Fight and a Five-Point Chase

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026. All times Eastern (ET).

No major series is on track today or tomorrow. We checked the official calendars for F1, IndyCar, NASCAR Cup, MotoGP, WEC, IMSA, WRC and the main feeder series: IndyCar crowned Alex Palou in August, neither IMSA nor the WRC is in action this week, and WEC’s next round is Monza on Nov. 8. The first green light of the week is MotoGP practice at Phillip Island on Thursday night. So instead of a race notebook, this is what the paddock is waiting on this week, and it starts with Kimi Antonelli’s Austin title chance.

1. The headline development: Antonelli’s Austin title equation

Confirmed: Antonelli finished third in Singapore on Oct. 11, behind Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. George Russell, his Mercedes teammate and nearest rival, came through from the back of the grid to ninth, according to Formula 1’s report. That left Antonelli 102 points clear with six Grands Prix and 150 points to go. Austin has no Sprint, so it is worth a maximum of 25 points.

Asked after Singapore whether he could seal it in Austin, Antonelli said: “Can I? Really? Let’s not worry about that!”

The equation, as laid out by Auto Action from the official standings, is short. Antonelli must win, Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Lewis Hamilton must finish fifth or lower. If he doesn’t win, the title stays open. We broke down the records he would set in how Antonelli can be crowned in Austin and the age record at stake.

2. What the standings actually show

F1, behind the leader: Russell 238, Hamilton 229, Verstappen 221, Leclerc 215, Lando Norris 201. If Antonelli wins in Austin, Verstappen cannot catch him even with second place. Verstappen won the last two races, the Malaysian and Singapore Grands Prix, and a third straight win would stop Antonelli from clinching on Sunday.

MotoGP:After Mandalika the order is Jorge Martin 355, Marc Marquez 353, Marco Bezzecchi 309, Ai Ogura 259, Pedro Acosta 258. The lead changed twice in Indonesia: Marquez won the Sprint and went four points clear, then Martin’s third place behind Bezzecchi’s win on Sunday put him back on top.

NASCAR Chase after Phoenix: Kyle Larson leads Christopher Bell by 5. Chase Briscoe is 24 behind, Denny Hamlin 31, Ryan Blaney 40, Joey Logano 44 and Phoenix winner Tyler Reddick 56. Austin Cindric, in eighth, is 130 back. Under the 2026 format the title goes to whoever has the most points after Homestead-Miami on Nov. 8, with no eliminations.

3. Three things that changed since last weekend

Championship math: Larson’s cushion is gone. He went into Phoenix 49 points clear and left 5 ahead, after hitting the wall with 31 laps to go and then finishing 34th with a flat tire. “Not a good one,” Larson said afterward, per Frontstretch. Hamlin also lost ground: a flat tire on lap 223 and a pit-road speeding penalty dropped him to 28th. Our full breakdown: Larson’s Phoenix tire failure and how Reddick won on two tires.

Driver market: Haas has filled one seat and has one announcement left. Haas confirmed F2 leader Rafael Câmara on a multi-year deal from 2027, replacing Esteban Ocon, on Oct. 15. Ollie Bearman has not yet been confirmed. Team principal Ayao Komatsu told RacingNews365: “it’s just a matter of timing, finalising certain details.” Racing Bulls is the only other team that hasn’t named its 2027 lineup.

Driver availability: MotoGP’s injury list reshapes Phillip Island. Fermin Aldeguer is out after hand surgery and is targeting a return at Sepang. Iker Lecuona replaces him at Gresini, and MCNews reports that Joan Mir’s return from illness is still unconfirmed. Others are riding through injuries: Raul Fernandez raced Mandalika with a broken right index finger and Ogura with a fractured finger. In WEC, Toyota clinched the manufacturers’ title with a one-two in Barcelona on Sunday, which leaves only the intra-team drivers’ fight for Monza (our analysis).

4. The decisive sessions (all times ET)

Who to watch: In Austin, watch Verstappen and Red Bull, who have won the last two races, and Ferrari’s Hamilton, who keeps the title open with a top-four finish if Antonelli wins. At Phillip Island, watch Martin, Marquez and Bezzecchi, plus Jack Miller at his final home MotoGP. At Talladega, watch the seven drivers within 56 points. Our Talladega preview shows why a superspeedway can move 70 or more points between contenders.

5. Championship impact

Analysis: In F1 the question isn’t whether Antonelli wins the title but when. With 102 points in hand, a non-winning Sunday only delays it to Mexico City. The pressure falls on Russell: if Antonelli wins, an eighth-place finish or better keeps the title open.

MotoGP is the opposite. Two points is less than one Sprint win, and the lead has already changed hands twice in a weekend. NASCAR sits in between. Larson leads Bell by 5 with three races left (Talladega, Martinsville and Homestead), and a single 55-point win can reshape the order, so Sunday matters more for avoiding a crash than for building a lead.

Further down the ladder, F2’s Middle East finale is still officially on. “We absolutely want to finish the championship as it is planned,” F2 CEO Bruno Michel told Reuters. That matters for Câmara, who leads by seven and already has an F1 seat confirmed for 2027.
