Samsung is reportedly working to improve the power efficiency of its Exynos modem ahead of the launch of the Galaxy S27 series. The upcoming M2700 modem, which will work alongside the Exynos 2700 chipset in some Galaxy S27 models, is expected to consume less power while delivering competitive performance.
Samsung’s Exynos-powered smartphones have often faced criticism for their standby battery consumption. In previous Galaxy flagship models, Exynos variants have generally struggled to match the power efficiency of their Snapdragon-powered counterparts, particularly when it comes to modem performance.

However, a new report suggests that Samsung’s System LSI division may have made significant progress in addressing this issue.
M2700 Modem Promises Better Power Efficiency
According to industry sources cited by The Elec, Samsung’s M2700 modem has achieved performance comparable to, or better than, competing products through voltage adjustments and other design improvements.
Interestingly, Samsung will manufacture the M2700 using the same 4nm process node used for the modem in the Exynos 2600-powered Galaxy S26 models. The existing modem’s name is Exynos Modem 5410, but Samsung is reportedly moving towards a new M-series naming system for its upcoming modems.
Despite using the same manufacturing process, the M2700 is expected to offer better power efficiency. Samsung has also reportedly reduced the modem’s chip area by 4% through an optical die shrink, which helps make the design more compact.
These improvements could help future Galaxy S27 models reduce unnecessary battery consumption, particularly when the phone remains connected to mobile networks while idle.
New Modem Brings 5G Advanced and Satellite Improvements
The M2700 will also introduce updated connectivity features. It will move from 3GPP Release 17 to Release 18, which is associated with 5G Advanced technology.
The upgrade will improve the modem’s capabilities and support newer cellular technologies. Samsung is also improving its Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) capabilities, which enable communication through satellite-based networks.
These developments could help Samsung strengthen the connectivity features of its future flagship smartphones.
Galaxy S28 Modem Could Move to 2nm Technology
Samsung is already looking beyond the Galaxy S27 series. According to the report, the company plans to introduce the M2800 modem with the Galaxy S28 lineup, using a more advanced 2nm manufacturing process.
The move to 2nm technology could further improve power efficiency while allowing Samsung to free up production capacity on its 4nm process.
Samsung reportedly plans to use some of that 4nm capacity to manufacture high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI servers. The company uses its 4nm process to produce the base logic die located beneath the stacked memory layers in HBM products.
This approach could help Samsung balance its smartphone chip development with growing demand for AI-related hardware.
Exynos 2700 Adoption in Galaxy S27 Ultra Remains Uncertain
Samsung’s System LSI division is continuing to improve its chip designs and reportedly wants Samsung’s mobile division, Samsung DX, to adopt more Exynos components in its flagship Galaxy S series.
However, the use of the Exynos 2700 in the Galaxy S27 Ultra remains under discussion, according to the report. It is not yet clear whether Samsung will equip its top-tier model with the upcoming Exynos chipset or continue relying on Snapdragon processors in certain markets.
If the reported improvements deliver the expected results, the M2700 could help Samsung address one of the longstanding concerns surrounding its Exynos-powered phones. However, the actual impact on battery life will only become clear once the Galaxy S27 series reaches the market.
