Apple is reportedly testing prototypes of the iPhone Duo 2 with under-display Face ID, potentially addressing one of the biggest complaints about its first foldable smartphone.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is experimenting with facial recognition technology beneath the outer display of its next-generation foldable iPhone.
Gurman shared the information during his latest Power On podcast, revealing that Apple is already working on improvements to the device as the first iPhone Duo reaches customers.
Face ID Could Replace Touch ID
The original iPhone Duo uses a Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into its side button instead of Apple’s Face ID system.
Early reviews have criticized the fingerprint sensor, with some users finding it difficult to reach depending on how they hold the device.
Reviewers also noted that unlocking the phone requires users to keep their finger on the sensor, making the process feel slower than Face ID.
Apple reportedly wants to address these complaints by integrating Face ID beneath the iPhone Duo 2’s outer display.
However, the company must reduce the size of key components, including the infrared camera and dot projector, to fit the system into the foldable’s thin design.
Action Button Could Return
Alongside Face ID, Apple is reportedly considering adding the Action button to the iPhone Duo 2.
The programmable button, which is available on other recent iPhone models, is missing from the first-generation foldable.
Gurman said Apple is exploring ways to include the feature in future Duo models, although its addition remains uncertain.
Expected Launch
Apple is reportedly targeting 2027 for the second-generation iPhone Duo.
However, Gurman noted that under-display Face ID is still being tested, and there is no guarantee the technology will be ready for the next model.
If development takes longer than expected, Apple could introduce the feature in a later generation instead.
The company has not officially confirmed the iPhone Duo 2 or its specifications.
