The World’s Shortest Scheduled Flight Can Take Just 53 Seconds

32 minutes is all it takes to travel between North Carolina's two largest cities, Raleigh and Charlotte onboard American Airlines. For a key connecting market for Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) serves over 525,000 passengers annually. At an unusually short flight time, the flight is quite often equipped with a larger Airbus A321.

However, many flights worldwide clock in at much lower flight time. Qatar Airways has scheduled a pairing between Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Bahrain International Airport (BAH) at 92 nautical miles (148 km). Corendon Airlines flies an Airbus A350 between Bonaire's Flamingo International Airport (BON) and Curacao International Airport (CUR) in the Dutch Caribbean, covering just 41 nautical miles (76 km). Many airlines, often in the pursuit of feeding a hub and spoke model, will deploy aircraft on unusually short flights to gain access to an additional market.

Scotland's Shortest Flight Just Got Shorter

Loganair’s Inter-Isles service connects various island communities of Scotland, as a part of the United Kingdom. This service is part of a regional network that connects six Orkney Islands to one another, as well as to Kirkwall (KOI). From Kirkwall, passengers traveling on Loganair can connect to various cities in the United Kingdom, as per their website:

• Aberdeen Dyce Airport (ABZ)
• Edinburgh Airport (EDI)
• Glasgow International Airport (GLA)
• Inverness (INV)
• Sumburgh (LSI)
• Eday (EOI)
• North Ronaldsay (NRL)
• Papa Westray (PPW)
• Sanday (NDY)
• Stronsay (SOY)
• Westray (WRY)
• George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD)
• Manchester Airport (MAN)

According to the Telegraph, Papa Westray to Westray set a new Guinness World Record with a 53-second flight time, beating its previous record of 56 seconds. The flight covered a total of 1.7 nautical miles (2.74 km). Reporter Greg Dickinson describes the experience as the shortest flight on Earth.

The plane, a Britten-Norman Islander, is spiritually closer to a bread bin than a Boeing, with space for just eight passengers plus a single pilot. There are no loos. No in-flight entertainment. There’s no seat selection, either, as passengers are told where to sit to ensure a fair distribution of weight in the aircraft. Hand luggage is popped in the boot.

Papa Westray features service to Kirkwall and North Ronaldsay Airport in addition to Westray. The interisland model can be compared with similar business models to that of InterCaribbean Airways or even United Airlines with their respective regional, island-hopping schedules. Such flight schedules help connect remote island communities with larger regional centers, such as Kirkwall.

The Importance Of Westray to Papa Westray

Papa Westray is not a remote, isolated destination such as Iqaluit (YFB) in Canada, but an important part of a wider interisland transport network. While the route has become famous as the world's shortest scheduled flight, its practical value lies in connecting Papa Westray residents to Westray, where they can access additional services, several onward transport links, healthcare, education, and commerce.

For many islanders, the flight is less a novelty and more essential infrastructure, replacing journeys that would otherwise depend on weather-sensitive ferry services or significantly longer surface travel. The reported fare for this route starts at £16 ($21.17). The role of this unique service becomes even more apparent when considering the geography of Orkney itself. Papa Westray is home to only a small permanent population, making it difficult to justify standalone air services.

The future of the Westray-Papa Westray flight ultimately depends on broader questions about public service obligations, regional connectivity, and how far governments are willing to go to preserve lifeline transport links for the smallest communities in the United Kingdom. In 2014, Orkney Islands Council began researching the addition of ferry services, bridges, or potentially tunnels to improve the islands' connectivity.

How Loganair Makes The Route Work

Orkney Islands Council reports that the route has been in place since 1967. It has survived for nearly six decades because it is not operated as a standalone commercial flight. Rather, most passengers are transient and continue on to destinations such as Kirkwall or Aberdeen. Orkney's wider interisland air network links six of the North Isles with Kirkwall and each other under a Public Service Obligation (PSO) contract.

Rather than relying solely on local demand between two islands separated by just 1.7 nautical miles (2.74 km), Loganair integrates the flight into a much larger transportation system that provides essential connectivity for residents traveling to school, medical appointments, government services, and onward flights across Scotland. The route is therefore seen as a main transportation artery for the region, rather than an individual airline service.

However, the structure that keeps the route alive also creates an interesting question. If the flight exists because governments and local authorities view it as essential infrastructure rather than a profit-making operation, what happens if a different form of infrastructure can accomplish the same task? As Orkney continues to evaluate improved ferry links, fixed crossings, and other long-term transportation investments, the world's shortest flight could eventually face competition from the very connectivity improvements it was originally designed to provide.

The Future Of Westray - Papa Westray

In recent years, Orkney has considered swapping Loganair's obligatory connection between the two communities with ground or sea transport. However, such changes won't happen until 2029 at the earliest. Loganair currently operates under a contract from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2029.

Councilor Mellissa Thomson, Vice-Chair of the Development and Infrastructure Committee and representative of the North Isles ward, has described Loganair's services in the region as a lifeline.

Our inter isles air service is vital to our isles’ communities – whether that be by providing quick and easy access to mainland Orkney and beyond for local folk, bringing itinerant teachers out to our isles’ schools, bringing youngsters into Papdale Halls or offering an alternative to the ferry for our visitors.

For passengers, this means the future of the world's shortest flight may be shaped by alternatives that are potentially better suited to the islands' needs. If air transport remains the fastest and most practical solution, the route could continue operating much as it has since 1967. However, if ground or sea-based infrastructure eventually offers comparable connectivity at lower cost or greater capacity, the flight's viability could rapidly diminish. Novelty alone likely could not keep such a route afloat.

Alternatives Are Already Being Considered

Much like in Istanbul, Türkiye, a ferry-based transportation economy may end up replacing the short flight and becoming a staple for the local transportation. Orkney Ferries is the leading ferry company that specializes in regional ferry connectivity between the islands in the Orkney region. While the Westray and Papa Westray services are offered up to 12 times daily, Loganair's support helps increase options for those traveling between the two locations.

Bridges, causeways, and roadways are the next viable infrastructure option for the region. Neither official renderings nor proposals have been announced for Orkney in particular. However, the Shetland region has planned tunnels to link its largest islands, as The Guardian reported. This could serve as inspiration, or even a blueprint, for Orkney's future transport infrastructure.

For now, the world's shortest flight appears secure under Loganair's current contract. Yet the key question remains unresolved. Will future generations view the Westray-Papa Westray service as an enduring piece of Scottish aviation heritage, or as an interim transportation solution that survived until a bridge, tunnel, ferry upgrade, or some other alternative finally made it unnecessary?

Potential Threats To Loganair's World Record

For Loganair, the biggest threat to its Guinness World Record may not come from a bridge or tunnel. If Loganair ever lost the title of world's shortest flight, who would take it? Several routes come surprisingly close, though none currently threaten Loganair's crown. As discussed by My Flight Routes, airlines around the world continue to operate flights that would seem absurdly short by conventional standards:

Harle-Wangerooge, a segment based domestically within Germany, comes in at a distant second place. At 5.7 nautical miles (10.5 km), it's still significantly shorter than an average American flight from Raleigh to Charlotte, but far from beating Loganair's Westray service.

Ironically, perhaps the most realistic challenger to Loganair's record could also be Loganair itself. The airline already operates a unique network of short interisland services across Orkney, and few carriers elsewhere in the world serve communities separated by such small stretches of water. Until another operator launches an even shorter scheduled route, aviation enthusiasts will keep watching the tiny Britten-Norman Islander lift off from Westray and land less than a minute later on Papa Westray, preserving one of commercial aviation's most unusual records for at least a little while longer.
