Starlink’s military version in Ukraine is still subject to a speed restriction, the Associated Press reported, citing a senior European official familiar with the situation.
The official said Ukrainian authorities still have not received an explanation of who ordered the restriction or why the decision was made.
U.S. President Donald Trump said October 22 that Starlink in Ukraine was once again operating without restrictions. Sources told The Wall Street Journal that Trump personally told Elon Musk to lift the restrictions.
On October 14, the Ukrainian military reported restrictions on SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communication terminals — specifically, their military version, Starshield. The terminals lost connection and stopped working when drones exceeded 160 kilometers (99 miles) per hour.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he had not ordered the Starlink speed restriction. SpaceX chief Elon Musk said decisions on Starshield’s operation are made at the level of the Pentagon and the White House. Journalists from various outlets, citing their own sources, say Musk and Trump made the decision to restrict Starlink in Ukraine.
