The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued an agency notice to First Community Bank demanding KSh 623,389,105 from accounts held by former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi Gidion Kioko, according to an official KRA document dated October 12, 2026.

The notice, signed by Njoroge Muiruri, debt enforcement manager in KRA's Debt, Refunds and Ledger Management Division, instructs the bank to remit any funds it holds on Sonko's behalf directly to the authority.
What is the basis for KRA's notice?
KRA invoked Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, which empowers the authority to designate a third party, such as a bank, as an agent of a taxpayer who has defaulted on tax obligations. Under this provision, the bank is legally required to pay KRA from any money it owes to, holds for, or is authorised to pay to Sonko.

The notice was copied directly to Sonko at a Nairobi post office box and an email address listed in KRA's records.
"In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, I hereby declare you to be an agent of the above taxpayer and require you to pay me the sum of KSh 623,389,105," Muiruri stated.
Breakdown of Mike Sonko's tax arrears
The outstanding amount covers individual income tax for the period spanning January 2015 to December 2019.
Of the total KSh 623,389,105 demanded, KSh 308,916,928 represents the principal tax liability, KSh 15,756,912 constitutes penalties, and KSh 298,715,265 is accumulated interest.
KRA noted that if First Community Bank makes only a partial payment, the agency notice will remain in force until the full amount is recovered.
The authority further warned that under Section 42(13) of the Tax Procedures Act, any bank that fails to comply without reasonable cause becomes personally liable for the specified sum.
The bank was directed to make payment through a valid system-generated payment slip and to submit a return to KRA disclosing any funds held on Sonko's behalf.
What is Sonko's net worth?
Previously, Sonko has estimated his net worth at more than KSh 32 billion.
The former Nairobi governor attributed his vast wealth to several private business ventures.
He said he built his business portfolio before and during his time in politics.
