Nigeria is seeking to translate global discussions on development finance into national development priorities, following the participation of a Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) delegation in an international forum in Lima, Peru.
The meeting, known as Total Official Support for Sustainable Development, is aimed at facilitating the application of discussions and knowledge gained at the forum to Nigeria’s development priorities.
Nkem Anyata-Lafia, special adviser on media and publicity to NTAC’s director-general, Yusuf Yakub, in a statement, said the Nigerian delegation, along with representatives of participating countries, brainstormed on development financing and improved data collection on resources supporting sustainable development.
The delegation comprised Gwendy Omije, deputy director and head of administration, and Bukola Ejiwale, assistant director of NTAC. He said the delegation engaged with international development partners and relevant platforms to engage in brainstorming.
The participation comes amid efforts to improve transparency and accountability in development financing, particularly by providing comparable data on the resources available to developing countries.
TOSSD is an international statistical framework designed to track official resources supporting sustainable development, including private finance mobilised through official interventions and funding for global and regional public goods.
Unlike measures limited to traditional official development assistance, the framework captures a broader range of development-related financial flows, including grants, loans, South-South cooperation and resources channelled through multilateral institutions.
The framework supports monitoring of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 17, which calls for stronger global partnerships to mobilise resources for sustainable development.
According to the TOSSD Secretariat, the framework was recognised as a data source for SDG indicator 17.3.1, which measures additional financial resources mobilised for developing countries from multiple sources.
For Nigeria, improved information on development finance could help policymakers identify available resources, assess financing gaps and strengthen coordination between international partners and national development plans.
The forum’s significance extends beyond discussions on financing volumes to the quality, transparency and practical use of data in shaping development policies.
Nigeria is among the members of the International Forum on TOSSD, which includes recipient countries, traditional development partners, South-South cooperation providers and international organisations.
