The Minnesota Vikings have had a very impressive start to the 2026 season as they are currently 6-0.
However, the Vikings have lacked consistency on the offensive side of the ball, but the defense and the special teams have played incredibly well, so it has not mattered a ton, but the Vikings do need to be better on offense, which could require Minnesota to make a move.
With that said, ESPN senior NFL Bill Barnwell put together a piece proposing NFL trade deadline offers: moves for Saquon Barkley, Khalil Mack, and more, and in those proposals, Barnwell suggested that the Vikings should consider trading for Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
Diving deeper into this proposal from Barnwell, he believes that if the Vikings were to trade for Barkley, it would require Minnesota to trade a third-round pick (with conditions) in exchange for Barkley, which would be a solid move for the Vikings if the Eagles were to agree.
Barnwell also noted that the Vikings would owe Barkley about $17 million over the next two years if this deal went through and with $38 million in cap space for next season Minnesota is in a good spot before restructuring the contract of wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
When it comes to whether or not the Vikings can afford Barkley, the answer is definitely yes and looking at how Barkley fits in Minnesota there is no question he could help this team.
So far this season, the Vikings have really struggled to sustain drives on offense as well as generate negative plays, which is partly due to the significant number of injuries on offense, but additionally, quarterback Kyler Murray has been unable to find consistent openings in the passing game because the run game has not forced defenses to play more aggressively.
On Barkley's side, he has struggled with injuries so far this year as he suffered a neck injury in Week 2 and had a Grade 1 right hamstring strain/pull in Week 4, which forced him to miss Week 5 and Week 6, but he is expected to be back in Week 7.
Despite all the injuries, Barkley has been solid when he has been on the field. Thus far this season, Barkley has 36 carries for 182 yards, zero touchdowns, six first downs, one fumble, and has averaged 5.1 yards per carry.
While Barkley has had issues with injuries this year he has taken advantage of his opportunities which is promising and throughout his career he has been a player who has the ability to create explosive plays at any point which is exactly the type of player that the Vikings could use in this offense.
Ultimately, a lot of this will come down to whether or not the Eagles want to trade Barkley and what they think about him long term because the Philadelphia roster is solid and they could still compete for a division title if all the pieces fall in line for them. However if the Eagles do want to move on from Barkley, the Vikings should make the call to add the explosiveness they have really lacked on offense.
So, as the Vikings move forward it will be interesting to see if the offense can take steps forward but also if Barkley is truly available, because if Minnesota could acquire Barkley from Philadelphia the ceiling of the Vikings offense could become a lot higher and possibly put Minnesota in a position to be a top-tier NFC contender.
