Cryptocurrency trading is increasingly appearing inside banking applications, allowing customers to purchase digital assets without opening separate exchange accounts. New services from established banks demonstrate growing demand, but convenience does not eliminate trading costs, custody restrictions or market volatility.
How Bank-App Crypto Trading Works
Customers typically complete identity verification, select Bitcoin or another supported asset, enter an amount, and confirm a quoted price. The bank or its regulated partner executes the trade, while a custodian generally holds the cryptocurrency.
In October 2026, Standard Chartered introduced Bitcoin and Ether trading for eligible professional investors in the United Arab Emirates. Its arrangement with Zodia Markets supports trading and custody within the bank's ecosystem, without requiring customers to manage external wallets.
Germany's Sparkassen network also began rolling out crypto trading through its banking app, initially across five of 339 member savings banks. The offering includes Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Polygon, with a potential customer network of approximately 50 million.
Understanding Fees and Spreads
Costs vary significantly between providers. Sparkassen's new service charges EUR 0.99 per order plus a spread, according to launch reporting. The spread represents the difference between quoted buying and selling prices.
Revolut's published UK fee schedule lists a 0.99% percentage fee for certain Premium and Metal crypto exchanges, subject to minimum charges. Eligible external withdrawals also incur service and blockchain network fees. For example, a 1% trading fee on a GBP 1,000 purchase costs GBP 10 before any spread. Selling later may generate another charge, reducing net returns even if the market price remains unchanged.
Availability also differs by jurisdiction and customer category. Standard Chartered initially limits its UAE offering to professional investors, rather than all account holders. Before purchasing, customers should check whether their banking provider offers actual cryptocurrency ownership, an investment product tracking crypto prices, or merely transfers to an external exchange.
Custody, Withdrawals and Market Risks
Bank integration does not necessarily mean customers control private keys. Some services restrict transfers to outside wallets, while others permit withdrawals only to approved destinations.
Cryptocurrency prices can move sharply, and digital assets generally lack the deposit protection associated with qualifying bank savings. Customers also face cybersecurity threats, platform outages, regulatory restrictions and possible losses from execution spreads.
Final Thoughts
Banking apps simplify access, not investment risk. Comparing total fees, custody terms, supported coins, and withdrawal rights remains essential before placing a trade. As more financial institutions introduce cryptocurrency services, transparency around pricing, asset ownership, and investor protection will become increasingly important. Users should also assess market volatility and regulatory safeguards before integrating digital assets into their investment portfolios.

FAQs:
1. Can you buy Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies directly through a banking app?
Yes, some banks and financial platforms allow eligible customers to purchase cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana directly through their applications. Availability depends on the institution, country, regulatory requirements, and customer eligibility.
2. How much do banks charge for cryptocurrency trading?
Cryptocurrency trading fees vary by provider and may include transaction charges, percentage-based commissions, spreads, and blockchain withdrawal fees. For example, Germany's Sparkassen service charges EUR 0.99 per order plus a spread, while certain Revolut UK transactions carry a 0.99% fee.
3. Is cryptocurrency trading through a banking app safer than using a crypto exchange?

Investors should compare trading commissions, spreads, supported cryptocurrencies, custody arrangements, withdrawal permissions, and applicable regulatory protections. They should also confirm whether they own transferable cryptocurrency or merely hold a financial product tracking its price before investing.
