SHILLONG, Oct 23: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) representing stone crusher owners, quarry operators, and transporters has put its proposed hunger strike on hold following an assurance from Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong that their grievances will be addressed in the next Cabinet meeting.
Tynsong, who chairs the committee on stone and sand mining, met JAC leaders on Thursday evening.
The meeting followed an ultimatum from the group demanding an end to the alleged harassment of those involved in the quarrying and transport business.
The JAC, which includes stakeholders from across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, had threatened to launch a hunger strike in Shillong if the government failed to act by the end of October.
According to the JAC, Tynsong informed them that the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had rejected certain state-proposed provisions regarding mining.
The matter is now slated for further discussion at the Cabinet level to find a way forward.
While the strike has been deferred, the JAC remains watchful of the government’s next steps to resolve the ongoing standoff.
