Are you watching closely? Well, soon you will be. Very closely, in fact. Yes, following hot on the heels of the outsized box office success of this summer's supersized blockbuster The Odyssey, today — on the 20th anniversary of Christopher Nolan's duelling magicians movie The Prestige's US theatrical release — Disney has just confirmed some very exciting news. On January 29, 2027, Nolan's Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman starring fifth feature is set to reappear in cinemas on 70mm, IMAX, 35mm, and 2D digital formats, offering audiences old and new alike a chance to experience the magic of a low-key underrated Nolan classic as it was always meant to be seen. Check out the announcement below;
Based on Christopher Priest's novel and structured like an illusion — complete with its own Pledge (the set-up), Turn (the surprise twist), and Prestige (the big reveal) — Nolan's chronologically tricksy tale casts Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as competing 'magicians' in the Victorian age, each intent on one-upping the other and discovering their secrets, no matter the (perhaps terrible) cost. While not perhaps as immediately apparent a blockbuster as a Dark Knight, an Oppenheimer, or indeed The Odyssey, don't let the wrapper fool you, friends: The Prestige — boasting a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, and actual David Bowie as actual Nikola Tesla — is a perfect rendering of exactly what it means to have an audience in the palm of your hand, to cast a spell that'll leave all viewers totally enrapt as they scratch their heads and scoop their jaws from the floor.
“I’m very excited to bring The Prestige back to the big screen,” said Nolan in a statement accompanying today's announcement, “and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time.” And you can see a new poster for the re-release below;
With cinema's celluloid revival in full effect right now, spearheaded by the likes of Nolan's Odyssey as well as Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, Ryan Coogler's Sinners, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Digger, and Greta Gerwig's forthcoming Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, the prospect of getting to see a modern classic such as The Prestige on the biggest canvas around is a tantalising one, indeed. Whether you've seen it before or not, it promises to be a magic time at the movies! *Ba-dum-tsh!*
