Revolut customers in Portugal had problems using the banking app on 20 October 2026, following a technical failure affecting Google Cloud services in Europe.
Some customers were unable to log into their accounts, while others had difficulties making payments, transferring money or withdrawing cash.
Portuguese newspaper Observador reported that the problems also affected users in Portugal, with customers receiving error messages or being unable to access the app.
Revolut confirmed that it was experiencing technical difficulties and said its teams were working to get services back to normal. The company also reassured customers that their money and personal data were safe.
The problems were not limited to logging into the app. Card payments, bank transfers, cash withdrawals, currency exchange and some investment services were also affected.
What caused the problems?
The issue was traced to a Google Cloud data centre in London, which is used by several companies to run their online services.
Google explained that a power problem at its Europe West 2 data centre had caused the disruption, leaving some of its customers unable to use their services normally.
Revolut was not the only bank affected. Customers of several British banks, including Lloyds, Halifax and HSBC, also reported problems with online banking.
The company began restoring its infrastructure on Tuesday, although some businesses continued experiencing difficulties as their systems recovered.
Other affected organisations included parcel delivery companies and public services in the United Kingdom, while ING Germany also reported problems accessing its banking application.
The incident demonstrated how a technical problem at a single data centre can affect many different companies at the same time, particularly when they rely on the same cloud infrastructure.
Services gradually restored
Google announced on Tuesday that most of the affected cloud services had recovered, although a small number of customers were still experiencing problems.
Revolut also began restoring some of its services during the afternoon and evening. However, Reuters reported that several banking functions were still affected at around 5pm GMT on Tuesday.
The company reassured customers that their funds and data were secure throughout the disruption.
The incident has also raised questions about the dependence of banks and other essential services on large technology providers, particularly as more financial operations move online.
Customers experiencing problems with Revolut can check the bank's official service status page for updates on the availability of individual banking functions.
