The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has temporarily postponed its proposed road blockade near the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) bridge on Chennimalai Road, scheduled for Thursday (October 22, 2026), following an assurance from the Highways Department that repair work would begin on October 26.
Guru Gunasekaran, district deputy president of the BJP, said the bridge near the Chennimalai ITI had been opened to traffic about four months ago. Though Chennimalai Road had been widened into a four-lane road up to K.K. Nagar, a tar road had been laid only up to the ITI, leaving the remaining stretch up to K.K. Nagar with a gravel surface.
He said the road was an important route to Chennimalai and was used daily by thousands of schoolchildren and members of the public. Five schools, two colleges and government offices were located along the stretch. The absence of a tar road had caused hardship to students and motorists.
Mr. Gunasekaran said the party had submitted petitions to the District Collector on August 6 and 31, and recently, seeking completion of the road work, but no action had been taken.
Following an assurance from regional engineers of the Highways Department that repair work would begin on October 26, the party decided to defer the protest temporarily. The BJP warned that it would resume the road blockade if the work did not begin as promised.
