Rising prices and a persistently weaker peso are actively squeezing household budgets across the country, creating a quiet but mounting financial strain. Alongside these pressures, there is growing evidence of trouble with credit-card repayments which raises a difficult and urgent question: how much of today’s consumer spending can families afford without compromising their future financial stability?
A national economy can easily maintain its outward momentum even when its individual households are running dangerously short of cash.
Day by day, groceries still reach the kitchen table, children still manage to get to school, and fuel still goes into private and public vehicles for the daily commute.
However, when everyday expenses outlast the payday cycle, spending continues only as financial strain accumulates behind the scenes. Today’s retail purchase undeniably supports current economic activity, but the resulting financial obligation ruthlessly follows the family into the next month.
When assessing the true health of the economy, it pays to look beyond the usual headline forecasts for Philippine economic growth, inflation, and currency valuation.
A far more revealing question is whether families earn enough to sustain their current spending habits, or whether they increasingly need to rely on high-interest credit to bridge the widening gap between their stagnant incomes and escalating daily costs.
While aggregate banking figures cannot identify every individual borrower’s specific grocery or utility purchases, they clearly show when repayment troubles begin to grow faster than the credit supporting those transactions.
Recent data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for universal and commercial banks, as presented by Estella Dhel Villamiel, First Metro Securities department head for institutional research, illustrate this trend.
Speaking before the bi-monthly forum of the Monday Circle Group at the Westin Manila, Villamiel says credit-card receivables reached P1.294 trillion in June, a notable increase from P1.229 trillion in March.
Over that exact same period, non-performing card receivables—the balances going unpaid—rose from P61.07 billion to P68.28 billion. These quarterly increases represent an overall portfolio growth of approximately 5.3%, but a much steeper 11.8% jump in bad debts.
Because troubled balances grew more than twice as fast as the overall lending portfolio, their total share was lifted from 4.97% to 5.28%. Although these figures represent amounts owed rather than the absolute number of distressed borrowers, the aggressive upward direction warrants immediate attention.
To be clear, this data does not definitively establish a full-blown household debt crisis. Card usage naturally expands as more consumers enter the formal financial system, transition away from cash-based transactions, or simply utilize convenient payment terms for routine shopping.
Furthermore, outstanding receivables temporarily include affluent customers who reliably settle their statements in full each month. While aggregate figures do not strictly prove that families are swiping their cards just to buy basic food or fuel, they establish the defensible and narrow finding that repayment stress is noticeably increasing within an expanding credit portfolio.
The broader economic environment makes this subtle warning much harder to dismiss. September inflation reached a punishing 7.2%, up significantly from 6.1% in August. Every family’s individual burden depends heavily on their specific basket of purchases, but consumers with little discretionary money left after buying essentials have far fewer ways to absorb these higher prices.
Each of the options available to them—cutting back on consumption, depleting emergency savings, seeking exhausting additional work, or borrowing—carries a heavy toll. Borrowing simply shifts that cost, with interest, into another month.
Global oil prices and the weakening peso compound this pressure through nearly every ordinary transaction. Expensive imported fuel inevitably raises overhead costs for motorists, transport operators, and logistics businesses moving goods across the archipelago.
Simultaneously, a weaker peso directly inflates the local cost of all dollar-priced imports. Families feel these relentless pressures through rising transport fares, delivery charges, and the inflated cost of goods transported over long distances, even if they do not own a car or purchase imported luxury items.
While access to credit softens the immediate blow of these price shocks, carrying a rollover balance creates an entirely new monthly expense. Consider an illustrative P20,000 balance charged at a standard 3% for just one month: the interest alone would be P600, calculated before any other applicable late fees, charges, and adjustments.
Actual billing depends on specific card terms and payment timing, but once interest permanently enters the household budget, a portion of the next paycheck is automatically hijacked to pay for past spending rather than putting anything new on the family table.
It would be convenient for analysts to blame these repayment difficulties entirely on careless or financially illiterate borrowers. However, making that assumption requires concrete evidence, in the same way that claiming every unpaid balance represents genuine economic hardship does.

A serious examination must carefully distinguish between frivolous discretionary spending, sudden income disruption, and the desperate cycle of repeated borrowing. It must also recognize that cardholders represent only a fraction of the wider population. Millions of families outside the formal credit market face severe financing pressures that banking tables simply cannot capture or measure.
Labor market data reflect this underlying fragility. In August, the national unemployment rate hit 5.3%, compared to just 3.9% a year earlier, while underemployment reached 11.9%, up from 10.7%.
While both metrics showed slight improvements from July, they remain worse than the previous year’s readings. Simply having work and having enough work to pay the bills are entirely different household experiences. The consistent availability of sufficient income matters just as much as its baseline purchasing power.
Villamiel provided this critical macro research: The snapshot included forecasts from the DBS Bank (formerly the Development Bank of Singapore) projecting inflation to average a painful 6.5% in 2026 and 5.5% in 2027, with the peso heavily depreciating to P64 per dollar by the end of 2027. These sobering projections strongly suggest that household financial pressure could stubbornly persist even as overall macroeconomic growth improves.
This dynamic is already visible in the national accounts. Household consumption managed to grow by 2.8% in the second quarter, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 2.3%, but gross capital formation alarmingly plummeted by 9.2%.
Because capital investment is the crucial engine that builds the business capacity and employment necessary for future income generation, its severe contraction should shift the national economic discussion well beyond merely encouraging consumers to spend more. Debt and credit cannot indefinitely substitute for the robust economic foundation that makes consumer spending truly affordable.
The BSP now faces a highly difficult balancing act. Implementing a firm monetary policy can theoretically contain runaway inflation and stabilize currency pressure, but these tighter financing conditions weigh heavily on both retail borrowers and corporate employers. Furthermore, existing credit card charges do not automatically change with every policy-rate adjustment: a lower BSP rate would not retroactively erase the crushing balances already accumulated by households.
Genuine financial relief will require dedicated attention to real incomes, essential living costs, and repayment capacity alongside strict monetary stability.
Moving forward, commercial banks must closely monitor retail affordability and deteriorating accounts with the exact same vigilance they apply to portfolio growth.
Meanwhile, the government must aggressively work to restore financial breathing room by ensuring reliable food supplies, building efficient transport and energy systems, encouraging productive capital investment, and strengthening consumer protection.
Aggregate consumer spending can often look incredibly resilient on paper while individual family budgets simultaneously become dangerously fragile. The ultimate test of economic health is whether families can comfortably cover their essential needs without repeatedly carrying yesterday’s expenses into tomorrow.
While the upcoming surge in Christmas purchases may soon offer artificially reassuring signs of retail activity, the inevitable credit statements arriving in January should be watched with equal, if not greater, interest.
True economic recovery means that families can reliably meet ordinary expenses, systematically repay their debts, and still retain something for unforeseen emergencies.
When the paycheck consistently runs out before payday, securing a higher credit limit merely postpones the inevitable reckoning. It does not repair the broken household budget. – Rappler.com
