Tottenham Hotspur stunned Chelsea with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, ending their long wait for a Premier League win at the ground as a costly goalkeeping error and Cole Palmer’s dismissal turned the London derby in their favour.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders scored an own goal in the 77th minute before Mathys Tel sealed the victory with a superb individual effort three minutes from time, handing Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi a significant away win.
The defeat was Chelsea’s first home loss of the season under manager Xabi Alonso, while Tottenham secured their second consecutive league victory.
The match was goalless at half-time despite Tottenham enjoying much of the possession and creating several opportunities. Chelsea also threatened, but neither side could find the breakthrough during a competitive opening period.
Tottenham continued to press after the restart and were rewarded in the 77th minute when Penders mishandled Mateus Fernandes’ corner and punched the ball into his own net.
The goal gave the visitors the advantage, but Chelsea’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered another blow shortly afterwards when Palmer was sent off for a second yellow card following a foul on Conor Gallagher.
With Chelsea reduced to 10 men, Tottenham took advantage of the situation to strengthen their grip on the contest.
Tel produced the decisive moment in the 87th minute, embarking on an impressive solo run before firing a low shot past Penders to make it 2-0 and secure all three points for the visitors.
Tottenham’s victory was particularly significant given Chelsea’s recent dominance in the fixture. Spurs had endured a difficult record at Stamford Bridge and had not recorded a league victory there since 2018.
The result provided a major boost for De Zerbi’s side as they seek to climb the Premier League table, while Chelsea were left to reflect on defensive mistakes, Palmer’s dismissal and a disappointing attacking display.
Tottenham moved to 12th in the standings following the victory, while Chelsea missed the opportunity to strengthen their position after Saturday’s earlier results.
