In Spirited Thief, players take on the role of Elaj, a down-on-his-luck thief who is on the verge of being kicked out of his thieves' guild after a failed job. Together with his ghostly companion Trin, he sets out to restore his reputation through a series of daring heists. These take him into heavily guarded castles, dark crypts and mysterious dungeons filled with valuable loot. However, brute force won't get him very far. Instead, success requires clever thinking, stealth and careful preparation.
One particularly interesting feature is the way each heist is divided into two phases. First, players scout the area with Trin, a disembodied spirit who can spy on patrols, discover secret passages and locate hidden treasures. Then the actual heist begins with Elaj and his allies. The thieves move across grid-based maps in turn-based fashion, avoid guards, use magical abilities and try to make off with as much loot as possible. However, the alarm level rises with every turn, bringing additional guards into play and making escape increasingly difficult. Stolen gold can then be invested in new abilities. Thanks to extensive difficulty options and a rewind feature, even less experienced strategy fans can enjoy the game.
Steam players are particularly impressed by the game's tactical depth, two-phase heist system and charming pixel art. The different approaches to completing missions and the ability to revisit finished levels with new abilities have also been well received. However, the level design in the later stages of the game has drawn some criticism. According to some players, maps become increasingly large, confusing and time-consuming, particularly from the second act onward. Guard movements can also be difficult to predict or understand at times. Overall, an impressive 91% of more than 100 user reviews are positive.
Spirited Thief normally costs just under $15 on Steam, but it's currently available with a 90% discount until October 23, bringing the price down to $1.49. According to SteamDB, this matches its previous all-time low, which was last reached during the Steam Autumn Sale. On the Steam Deck, Spirited Thief is rated "Verified."

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
