Solana now has a physical address in Shanghai. Its first Builder Station for the Chinese-speaking market opened on March 20, 2026, at the Hongqiao Alibaba Center.
That is a notable move for a crypto network in a country where virtual currencies face tight restrictions. Solana is setting up shop anyway, and it is choosing its words carefully.
A builder hub, a tall office and a four-city tour
The Shanghai Builder Station has backing from the local government of the city’s Minhang District. It is meant to be a long-term base for collaboration on Layer 1 infrastructure and the applications built on top of it.
Calling it a “Builder Station” rather than a sales office is a deliberate signal. The pitch is aimed at developers, not traders.
On October 14, 2026, Solana’s Chief Product Officer Vibhu drew attention to the Shanghai location. He claimed the team occupies the world’s highest commercially available office space, a claim Solana Foundation President Lily Liu backed up.
Two days later, the Solana Accelerate China tour kicks off. It runs from October 16 to 22, 2026, and stops in four cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing.
The agenda centers on technology infrastructure, AI development and robotics. Direct promotion of digital assets is off the table, given China’s restrictive rules on virtual currencies.
Why China, and why this way
Solana’s approach reflects that reality. By leaning into infrastructure, AI and robotics, it can engage engineers and companies without stepping into token promotion.
The local government involvement is worth noting too. Support from Minhang District suggests Shanghai officials see value in hosting developer activity tied to the technology, even while virtual currency rules stay strict.
What this means for Solana and its rivals
The most direct comparison is BNB Chain. Solana has opened an office and advertised in China, while no comparable recent physical presence from BNB Chain has been reported there.
Because token promotion is avoided, any benefit is more likely to show up in developer activity and partnerships than in direct retail demand from mainland users.
The focus on AI and robotics is also telling. It positions Solana alongside sectors that already draw serious attention in China, which could make the blockchain pitch easier to hear.
Turnout and partnerships from the October 16 to 22 tour will show whether the developer-first approach is landing.
