In today's college football landscape, there's no debating the importance of financial backing to produce a quality product on the field. While major spending doesn't automatically equal success, it certainly doesn't hurt when it comes to acquiring and retaining talent. With the current rules of collegiate athletics being a grey area when it comes to NIL spending and budgeting, most coaches don't say much in regard to their team's budget.
Not Jedd Fisch.
During his Monday press conference, Washington's third-year head coach decided to put all his cards on the table, stating that UW simply doesn't have the financial capability to replace their top talent. With the Huskies' roster currently being one of the youngest at the Power Four level, Fisch suggested that he had no other choice but to turn to first-year players, rather than adding experienced talent from the transfer portal.
"Last year, we had seven guys drafted," Fisch said when asked about his expectations on the program's fundraising. "To replace the seven guys drafted, we needed to use our freshmen because we didn't have the finances to go replace them through the portal. So because of that, we now need our freshmen and our sophomores to stay. And to do that, then we'll be able to get back to where we wanted to be."
Jedd Fisch says @UW_Football is next to last in Big Ten in NIL funding and financial support.

In a report, @TheAthletic estimated UW’s budget is between $21M-$25M, which ranks in bottom half of Big Ten.
According to a recent report by The Athletic, the Huskies rank No. 13 out of 18 members of the Big Ten in total roster cost, sitting between the $21-25 million mark. While the numbers support Fisch's statement about a lack of financial backing, they also show that two of Washington's three losses in 2026, Minnesota and Iowa, fall below the Huskies in spending, with the Gophers sitting at No. 16 and the Hawkeyes right behind them at No. 17.
Who's in last? The Purdue Boilermakers, whom Washington is set to take on this Friday night in West Lafayette.
So while Fisch and his program aren't in the best spot financially, other programs in the conference have been able to prove that money isn't everything. Additionally, despite emphasizing the importance of retaining underclassmen on his roster, Washington lost numerous young players in the 2026 transfer cycle. The list includes freshman wide receiver Raiden Vines-Bright, sophomore running back Adam Mohammed, fourth-year center Zach Henning, and sophomore offensive lineman Paki Finau.
Entering his third year on Montlake, Fisch pushed a breakout season while many national analysts touted UW as a dark horse College Football Playoff contender. Now halfway through the regular season, the Huskies are 0-3 in Big Ten play, missing their starting quarterback, and are staring down the barrel of a road game against a hot Purdue team. So the question remains: what's the answer to turning things around for the Huskies?
According to the head coach, a few more dollars.
