KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry must intervene in the death of a man in police custody on Oct 1.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) said the explanation that Noorizwan Zulkefly, 42, died after falling in the lock-up was unreasonable and unacceptable, given the severity of his injuries.
He also said the investigating officer and all policemen involved in the case should be suspended immediately.
"Among the injuries reportedly sustained by the deceased were swelling in his legs and knees, wounds on his back and wrists, six broken ribs, serious head injuries, and bleeding in the intestines and brain.
"Noorizwan has died and can no longer defend himself. Even if he had a previous criminal record, he was detained for the purpose of an investigation in accordance with the law," he told reporters in the Parliament lobby.
Lawyers representing the family said Noorizwan was arrested on Sept 20 and held at the Cheras police headquarters for 11 days. His family claimed they were never informed of his arrest or detention.
On Oct 7, lawyer N. Surendran had said the case should be investigated for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code by an independent team not involved in managing Noorizwan's detention.
He had said the call followed the discovery of serious injuries on Noorizwan's body.
Noorizwan died while receiving treatment at Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital.
Surendran had said police should also publicly disclose the identities of the investigating officers and interrogation personnel involved, as well as the number of personnel involved.
On Oct 15, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police were still awaiting the full report from the Chemistry Department and pathology findings to determine the cause of the death.
