The card processor layer is entering stablecoin settlement, giving Marqeta's enterprise customers stablecoin-backed card capability without building crypto infrastructure.
Marqeta and Coinbase announced on October 16, 2026, a collaboration to enable stablecoin-backed card payments for Marqeta’s enterprise customers. By embedding Coinbase’s Base-based settlement into Marqeta’s existing issuing and processing platform, the partnership allows businesses to offer stablecoin-backed cards without the heavy lifting of building their own crypto infrastructure. This move signals that the card processor layer is officially entering the stablecoin settlement business, shifting the focus from consumer-facing crypto cards to backend infrastructure integration.
The Marqeta-Coinbase model occupies a distinct middle ground in the current market. At the network layer, giants like Visa have moved stablecoin cross-border payments to commercial production, while Mastercard has integrated stablecoin-linked card issuing via its BVNK acquisition. These network-level efforts operate at the top of the stack. Meanwhile, the principal-member model, exemplified by firms like Rain, seeks to bypass traditional intermediaries entirely. Rain holds direct memberships with networks, allowing for 24/7/365 settlement and the capture of fragmented value streams like interchange, FX spreads, and reserve yield. Marqeta, by contrast, acts as a bridge that leverages its existing bank and network relationships to provide a turnkey solution.
The three-layer stack now defining the industry creates a clear hierarchy of operational complexity. Principal members like Rain capture the maximum value by consolidating the entire payment chain, but they face significant operational overhead and the need for direct, complex network integration. Marqeta’s processor-layer model prioritizes scale and speed-to-market. It provides a vital abstraction layer for enterprise clients who lack the resources or the regulatory appetite to become principal members themselves. This creates a tiered ecosystem where processors provide the necessary infrastructure for mainstream adoption, while principal members target high-margin, crypto-native use cases.
For Marqeta, which processed nearly $400 billion in annual payments volume in 2025 across more than 40 countries, this is an expansion of an existing relationship. Coinbase provides the heavy lifting: custody of stablecoin balances, fiat conversion at the point of spend, and on-chain settlement on Base. For the enterprise customer, the result is a card that allows holders to spend at millions of merchants globally with 24/7 program funding, all without requiring a manual off-ramp. As Anthony Peculic, CSO of Marqeta, noted, As we build out the complete stack for stablecoin-backed cards, expanding our relationship with Coinbase was a natural next step. Together, we will expand what businesses can deliver through Marqeta’s issuing and processing platform.
With stablecoin payment volume exceeding $400 billion in the first eight months of 2026 alone, the demand for integrated rails is clear. The industry is also bracing for the GENIUS Act, which becomes effective on January 18, 2027. As Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Products at Coinbase, stated, Coinbase is enabling businesses to move money with the speed and efficiency they require. Our collaboration with Marqeta will combine our stablecoin payment rails with their powerful issuing and processing capabilities to deliver real-time global transactions that meet the needs of modern consumers and businesses.
Yet, as BIS research has suggested, the broader adoption of these assets remains sensitive to traditional banking variables like deposit rates.
Despite the strategic clarity, the announcement leaves several practical questions unanswered. Financial terms and the specific timeline for when these capabilities will be available to Marqeta’s broader customer base remain undisclosed. The model, while innovative in its application, still relies on the existing network and banking infrastructure that Marqeta has historically utilized. It is an infrastructure-level collaboration, not a fundamental rewrite of payment economics.
The partnership confirms that stablecoin utility is being integrated into the standard processing stack rather than remaining a siloed alternative. By democratizing access to these rails, Marqeta and Coinbase are positioning stablecoins as a backend settlement option that functions alongside fiat. The infrastructure is maturing, but the transition from pilot programs to high-volume production remains the primary hurdle for enterprise adoption.
