It’s a book Tom Cruise would probably like to forget.
The “Diggler” star’s biographer and buddy, J. Randy Taraborrelli, recalled when Cruise became a nervous nelly after finding out famed author Andrew Morton was penning a tell-all about him back in 2007, Taraborelli wrote on his Substack.
Taraborrelli said he was battling the flu and ignored numerous calls from Cruise, whom he became friendly with after interviewing him dozens of times over the years.
When he finally picked up Cruise’s call, he said, “Tom! What’s going on? Why have you called me thirty times?” to which Cruise replied, “I only called you once.”
Cruise told him he needed to see him urgently, so Taraborrelli pulled up to his Beverly Hills estate “a couple of days later,” where he met Cruise’s “new wife, Katie Holmes, for the first time,” he wrote.
Cruise appeared “rattled” and paced around, explaining, ‘“This guy Andrew Morton is writing a book about me,” which led Cruise to seek Taraborrelli’s advice on what to do about it. (Morton has written best-sellers on Prince Diana, Meghan Markle, Angelina Jolie and more).
“Tom, let it happen. You can’t control it,” Taraborrelli replied. Cruise eventually agreed after a fewmore conversations, and when Morton’s unauthorized biography was released, he sent Taraborrelli a bottle of Macallan whisky, with a note that read: “Let it happen.”
In a 2008 interview with Page Six, Morton admitted he was hassled by Cruise’s lawyer, who “sent his usual routine hostile letter,” he revealed.
“It’s standard whenever anyone’s investigating Tom… Did I worry about lawsuits with Cruise who is litigious and whose Scientologists sue just for fun? Yes, you always worry about that. But they take their time with legal huffing and puffing. Having to be deposed is a deterrent,” he said.
A rep for Cruise did not get back to us for comment.
