Abdulkadir Basari, a Kano-based tailor, is attempting to break a 120-hour non-stop sewing marathon today, Monday, October 12, to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.
Basari, who leads Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, started the challenge, titled, “Sew for the Nation’’ on Wednesday, October 7, at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano.
According to Basari, the event aims to break a world record while also supporting a charitable cause.
As part of the initiative, Basari is sewing school uniforms for underprivileged pupils in public schools to support education and help children from disadvantaged backgrounds. He hopes to surpass the current record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, set by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025.
Before embarking on the challenge, Basari said the attempt was more than a personal achievement, describing it as a chance to inspire artisans and young Nigerians to pursue their dreams.
However, Guinness World Records must still officially verify the outcome. If his attempt meets the organisation’s requirements and receives approval, Basari will become the new record holder in the category.
