The U.S. government has issued a safety alert to its citizens in Nigeria following the confirmation of an Ebola case in the country.
“The government of Nigeria reported a case of Bundibugyo virus disease on October 20. Health officials are conducting contact tracing. According to the Nigerian Ministry of Health, the individual travelled by air from Uganda,” the U.S. consulate announced on Wednesday.
Raising the alarm about Ebola being a rare, severe, and often fatal haemorrhagic fever illness, the U.S. consulate instructed its citizens on actions to take while in Nigeria.
“Visit the CDC’s website for information on Ebola at www.cdc.gov/ebola. Visit the CDC Travellers’ Health Page for Nigeria. If at risk for Ebola, alert your healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms consistent with Ebola to receive guidance prior to presenting for care.
“Continue to take malaria prophylaxis as recommended by your doctor. Symptoms of malaria can mimic symptoms of Ebola, leading to preventable health scares. Monitor your health for 21 days following travel to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak.”
