Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is enduring the worst season of his career.
His team is off to a 0-5 start, and his play is part of the reason. Herbert appears to have lost a step under Mike McDaniel, an offensive coordinator who was supposed to take him to another level.
Instead, Herbert appears to have regressed significantly. The Chargers' 2026 season has become a nightmare, and many have wondered whether they will blow it all up.
It’s a valid question as they sit winless in mid-October. Another conversation many are having is about Herbert's future with the team. Opinions and takes are flying off the wall, and former Super Bowl champion and analyst Phil Simms weighed in on Herbert’s future in Los Angeles.
Simms was asked what he thinks will happen with Herbert regarding his future with the team. He suggested that the Chargers could make significant changes, saying that he feels “pretty strongly” that Herbert won't be with the team next season.
“I feel pretty strongly that he won’t be there,” Simms said.
“This quarterback class, who knows how that’s going to be coming out. But I think they’re going to make severe changes to the football team, to the organization, to get this somehow back on track.
"There are a lot of teams in the NFL that will run and be willing to give up quite a bit for Justin Herbert, even though this year has been by far his worst.”
The Chargers could get a ton in return for Herbert, despite playing some of the worst football of his career through the first five games of the season.
However, even if that were the case, the Chargers aren't considering trading their franchise quarterback. As for the rest of the pieces on the team, that remains to be seen.
The Chargers have given fans little reason to be optimistic this season, making it increasingly likely they'll become sellers before the November 10 trade deadline. The question may no longer be whether they'll make a trade, but when they'll pull the trigger and how many players they'll move.
