Barcelona are keeping a close watch on Cavan Sullivan as uncertainty surrounding Manchester City’s financial case raises questions about the American teenager’s long-term future in European football.
According to SPORT, Barça’s sporting department is monitoring the Philadelphia Union midfielder and could explore an opportunity to sign him before his expected move to Europe.
Sullivan, 17 is already linked to Manchester City through a pre-agreement, which is expected to take effect when he turns 18.
That arrangement appeared to put the Premier League club in pole position for one of the most highly regarded young talents in American football, but the situation may yet change.
Manchester City’s financial case could affect Sullivan’s future
Sullivan attracted attention from several major European clubs after emerging in Philadelphia Union’s midfield.
On that note, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain were all reported to be interested before Manchester City secured the pre-agreement.

Now, however, the uncertainty stems from Manchester City’s 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, a case that remains unresolved.
Any eventual sanction could have implications for the club’s sporting plans, although relegation is only a potential outcome and no punishment should be treated as inevitable.
The uncertainty surrounding the case could complicate long-term planning for City and players whose futures are tied to the club.
Barcelona remain alert to a potential transfer opportunity
Sullivan’s representatives have previously acknowledged that circumstances could change.
His agent said a few weeks ago that “you never know what might happen, and we hope they sort it out in the best possible way.”
The comments leave room for uncertainty without confirming that Sullivan intends to abandon his agreement with Manchester City.

A potential change of destination would depend on how the financial case develops, the precise terms of the pre-agreement and the options available to the player.
Barcelona are prepared to monitor the situation closely. Sporting director Deco and his recruitment team have consistently prioritised identifying promising young players and assessing opportunities that could strengthen the squad over the longer term.
Could Sullivan become Barcelona’s next major prospect?
Barcelona’s interest would fit their recruitment strategy of identifying elite young talent before their market value rises significantly.
Sullivan’s reputation, versatility and the attention he has attracted from Europe’s leading clubs make him an intriguing prospect, although interest should not be confused with a formal transfer approach.
The timing is also important. With Sullivan’s anticipated European move still some distance away, Barcelona have an opportunity to assess his development rather than rush into a decision based on uncertainty at Manchester City.
For now, City’s agreement remains central to the story. Barcelona could become a serious alternative only if circumstances change, but the financial case alone does not guarantee that Sullivan will be available.
