The Mizoram government is exploring technical cooperation with NBCC (India) Limited to strengthen landslide mitigation measures and develop disaster-resilient infrastructure across the state.
Mizoram Minister for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Prof. Lalnilawma held a meeting with NBCC Chairman and Managing Director Dr. K. P. Mahadevaswamy at Mizoram House in New Delhi on Friday to discuss potential areas of collaboration.
During the meeting, the minister highlighted the recurring landslides in Mizoram, particularly during the monsoon season, which threaten human lives, roads, public infrastructure, residential areas and essential connectivity.
Emphasising the need for a comprehensive, scientific and long-term approach, Lalnilawma said landslide mitigation efforts must extend beyond temporary restoration and post-disaster interventions to ensure lasting protection for vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure.
The discussions focused on the potential use of NBCC’s technical expertise in landslide hazard mapping, geological and geotechnical surveys, slope stability assessments, identification of vulnerable locations and preparation of site-specific mitigation plans.
Engineering solutions, including retaining walls, gabion structures, soil nailing, rock bolting, slope stabilisation and improved drainage systems, were also discussed.
The National Landslide Risk Mitigation Programme (NLRMP) featured prominently in the discussions, with an emphasis on developing technically sound and sustainable mitigation proposals for priority landslide-prone areas in Mizoram.
Sushil Singh, Secretary of the state’s Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, briefed the meeting on Mizoram’s disaster situation, ongoing mitigation initiatives, operational challenges and efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness.
NBCC Director (Commercial) Dr. Suman Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and other senior and technical officials also attended the meeting to explore possible areas of cooperation and appropriate engineering interventions.
The meeting paved the way for further technical consultations between the Mizoram government and NBCC on addressing the state’s recurring landslide challenges.
Lalnilawma reiterated the state government’s commitment to adopting sustainable and scientifically designed solutions to reduce disaster risks, safeguard lives and strengthen the resilience of infrastructure and communities across Mizoram.
