Guwahati, Oct 20: Members of Raijor Dal and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) were detained during a protest outside the Assam Secretariat in Dispur on Tuesday, as demands for justice for legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg continued to mount.
The demonstration, planned as a human chain, turned tense when several protesters climbed onto the roof of a bus and raised slogans demanding accountability and a transparent investigation. Police and paramilitary personnel intervened, brought the demonstrators down and detained several activists.
Among those detained were KMSS general secretary Bidyut Saikia, Raijor Dal leaders Vedanta Laskar and Rakesh Chakraborty, and activist Gyanashree Bora.
Heavy security was deployed in the Dispur area ahead of the protest. The demonstration escalated as security personnel moved in to detain activists before the proposed human chain could fully form.
The agitation comes after a court granted bail to two accused in the case, Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg, triggering renewed demands from supporters for speedy judicial proceedings and accountability.
Protesters said the case must not be sidelined amid Assam’s festive celebrations and called for transparency in the investigation.
Tuesday’s protest is part of a wider movement across Assam seeking justice for Zubeen Garg.Earlier, the singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, joined his friends and supporters at a protest at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, calling for speedy justice.
