A nine-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Rajasthan's Phalodi district was brought out after a 39-hour rescue operation but was declared dead after being rushed to a hospital, officials said. The boy had fallen into a 1,050-foot-deep borewell during repair work at a farm on Thursday. He was believed to be trapped at a depth of around 640 feet.
The incident took place around 1.30 pm when workers were repairing a faulty borewell at the farm owned by the boy's father, Pancharam Bhil. As workers were pulling out pipes, the child accidentally slipped into the open borewell.
His father, who was removing the borewell motor at the time, witnessed the incident. He said he turned around to find only his son's head and hands visible above the opening. By the time he rushed to pull the child out, the boy had slipped further down the shaft.
Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), based in Ajmer, joined the operation at around 9 pm on Thursday.
Rescuers lowered a camera into the borewell to locate the child and assess his condition. Arrangements were also made to supply oxygen as teams worked to reach him.
The borewell's considerable depth and narrow opening posed major challenges for rescuers, who used camera footage to track the boy's position during the operation.
After nearly 39 hours of efforts, the child was finally brought out and rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
