Firefighters have extinguished an inferno caused by an accident involving a 33,000-litre diesel tanker that fell at Otedola Bridge on Monday.
Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
Mrs Adeseye said, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully extinguished a fire involving a 33,000-litre tanker at Otedola Bridge, Lagos.
“The Service received a distress call at 16:09 hours reporting a fire involving a tanker conveying petroleum products from a depot.
“The tanker reportedly fell between the inward and outward sections of Otedola Bridge, resulting in a fire outbreak.
“Upon receipt of the distress call, firefighters from the Alausa and Ikeja Fire Stations were immediately mobilised to the scene. The responding teams arrived at 16:16 hours and commenced firefighting operations.
“Through the prompt and coordinated intervention of the firefighters, the fire was successfully extinguished. Damping-down operations are ongoing to eliminate residual hotspots and prevent possible re-ignition.”
Mrs Adeseye stated that further details surrounding the incident would be communicated as verified information became available.
She also urged motorists to exercise caution around emergency scenes and comply with safety instructions issued by emergency responders.
The Lagos State Transport Management Authority had earlier in the day stated in a statement that two casualties were recorded as a result of the accident, which caused a traffic gridlock on the bridge.
