Meta is backing 10 Kenyan startups developing artificial intelligence solutions for local industries through a new competition that will award two winners $5,000 each in equity-free funding, alongside advertising credits and an opportunity to pitch at an international technology summit.
The inaugural AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon, organised by Meta in partnership with Nairobi-based AI accelerator This Is Digital, held on October 16 at The Social House in Lavington, Nairobi. The initiative will showcase startups using Meta’s AI technologies to tackle challenges ranging from healthcare delivery and educational accessibility to business automation, legal services and tax compliance.
The two winning teams will also receive invitations to present their solutions at Meta’s Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, on November 24, giving the Kenyan ventures an opportunity to showcase their products beyond the domestic market.
The competition comes as artificial intelligence adoption creates opportunities for African developers to build specialised tools around the continent’s business processes, languages and public-service needs. The participating startups are targeting practical applications rather than general-purpose AI, including medical reporting, school management, local-language accessibility and automated tax compliance.
Healthcare and education feature prominently
Healthcare and education account for six of the 10 finalists, highlighting the range of social and commercial problems represented in the competition.
Neural Labs Africa is developing NeuralSight, a tele-radiology and AI diagnostic reporting platform, while Solivia Data’s AfyaEdge combines solar power with offline triage hubs. O.C.A. is building offline claims-auditing software designed to support insurance and Social Health Authority compliance.
In education and assistive technology, Jackfruit Network is developing data-driven advisory tools for low-fee private schools. Utter Africa is building a Kiswahili-first augmentative and alternative communication platform for nonverbal children with autism spectrum disorder, while Me-Nasoma converts content into local Kenyan languages through text-to-speech technology.
The remaining finalists are focused on commercial operations, legal services and financial compliance.
TemboTrade is developing an AI-powered commerce and enterprise resource planning platform for small and medium-sized businesses, while JuaFlow connects customer communications with business management systems through workflow automation.
HakiChain is building a legal AI suite tailored to African law, with outputs grounded in legal citations. Sawazisha AI, developed by John Digital Solutions, uses WhatsApp to automate tax compliance by matching transactions with electronic tax invoices generated through Kenya’s eTIMS system.
These applications illustrate the breadth of the startups’ ambitions, although their commercial traction, deployment scale and revenue performance were not disclosed in the announcement.
Meta partnership targets AI adoption
The pitchathon also marks the formal launch of a strategic partnership between Meta and This Is Digital, an AI accelerator working on AI strategy, policy development, adoption and innovation across Africa.
The programme combines access to Meta’s AI technology ecosystem with a competitive platform for developers to demonstrate how their products address specific market needs. The equity-free awards offer the two winners funding without requiring them to surrender ownership in exchange for the prize.
The judging panel will include Chinny Francis, Meta’s policy programmes manager for AI and wearables; Gregory Wanjama, co-founder and chief executive officer of This Is Digital; Isaac Hunja, founder and CEO of Kaara Works; Evan Gichuki, director of digital products and services at Kenya’s State Department of ICT; and Nathasha Nalyaka, a data scientist and lecturer at Strathmore University’s iLab Africa.
The event will also feature Sarah Muyonga, Meta’s public policy manager for East and Horn of Africa, alongside representatives from This Is Digital and Kenya’s ICT department.
The organisers have not disclosed additional details on the selection criteria, the startups’ funding histories or their current user and revenue figures.
Istanbul opportunity extends competition beyond Kenya
The two winners will be invited to pitch at Meta’s Regional AI Summit in Istanbul on November 24, 2026. The opportunity gives the startups an additional platform to present their products to a wider technology audience, although the organisers have not specified whether the summit will include dedicated investor meetings or further funding opportunities.
The Nairobi event is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. East Africa Time on October 16, with the showcase, winner announcement and media interviews planned from 2 p.m.
For the participating ventures, the immediate prize is a combination of funding, advertising support and international exposure. Their longer-term prospects will depend on turning their AI applications into products that customers can adopt at scale, while demonstrating reliability and commercial viability in the markets they serve.
