Imphal, Oct 12: Manipur Chief Minister Khemchand Yumnam on Monday chaired the maiden meeting of the newly constituted Manipuri Pony Development Board at his Secretariat in Mantripukhri, marking a step towards conserving the state’s critically endangered Manipuri Pony breed.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister launched the Pony Registration System (PRS), a digital initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive database of the pony population and its owners. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, IGP (Zone-I) Themthing Ngashangva and senior officials from the Departments of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Tourism, Agriculture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Revenue, and Forest.
Representatives of the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Manipur Pony Society and Manipur Equestrian Association also participated in the deliberations.
The Board reviewed the Manipur Pony Conservation and Development Policy, 2016, and discussed updating strategies to address the breed’s declining population.
The protection of grazing grounds and the creation of dedicated reserves across districts also featured in the discussions. These measures are aimed at reducing incidents of ponies straying onto roads, preventing road accidents and addressing fodder shortages.
The meeting also highlighted the need for coordination among government departments to link pony conservation with eco-tourism, cultural heritage and traditional polo, known as Sagol Kangjei.
The newly launched registration system is expected to support the delivery of veterinary services, disease monitoring and financial or feed assistance, particularly for economically vulnerable pony owners and caretakers.
The Manipuri Pony, also known as Meitei Sagol, is recognised as one of India’s seven equine breeds and is historically associated with the origins of modern polo.
The constitution of the Development Board and the launch of the registration system mark an institutional effort to protect the breed, which holds cultural and sporting significance in Manipur.
