Dy minister urges completion of Suwung waste treatment facility

২৫/১০/২০২৬

Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Deputy Environment Minister Diaz Hendropriyono called for the swift completion of the wastewater treatment facility at Suwung Landfill in Bali to prevent leachate pollution from damaging the area's mangrove ecosystem.

"We appreciate the efforts made at this landfill to restore and replant mangroves, but leachate leaking is still found. Please complete the wastewater treatment plant immediately," he said in a statement on Sunday.

Speaking after inspecting the Suwung Landfill on Thursday (October 22), Diaz highlighted the ongoing leakage of leachate, a mixture of rainwater and accumulated garbage, as an emergency issue requiring an immediate solution.

Although the management has sought to restore the ecosystem by replanting mangroves, the completion of wastewater treatment infrastructure remains an urgent priority that cannot be postponed.

According to Diaz, mangroves play a vital role in protecting the environment, making their conservation a key concern as past pollution incidents have highlighted the ecosystem's vulnerability to poorly managed waste.

"Previously, leachate from the landfill seeped through a pipe and contaminated the mangroves. Imagine leachate accumulating in the mangrove ecosystem and killing the plants," he said, underscoring the urgency of protecting mangroves.

On that occasion, the deputy minister also lauded the fire mitigation efforts of the Suwung Landfill management, a concrete manifestation of compliance with the Minister of Environment's Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026 concerning Anticipation of Fires in Landfills During Extreme Hot Weather Conditions.

In response, the ministry warned that downstream waste management had become urgent, as Suwung Landfill was nearing capacity and could soon be unable to accommodate additional waste.

Diaz stressed that the facility would be unable to operate without upstream measures, urging the public to fulfill their environmental responsibilities by sorting household waste at its source.

"In 2-3 months, the Suwung Landfill will be overcapacity and unable to receive waste. Let us dispose of our waste at home and stop bringing it to the Suwung Landfill," he pointed out.
