Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua deliver sobering messages after Rams’ stunning loss to Cardinals: ‘We are what our record is’

Matthew Stafford has spent nearly two decades in the NFL learning how to handle defeat. He’s endured losing seasons, heartbreaking finishes and enough fourth-quarter disappointments to understand that football rarely rewards the deserving.

But even the reigning NFL MVP seemed to be running out of explanations on Sunday afternoon after watching his Los Angeles Rams squander another late lead in an excruciating 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium.

During his postgame press conference, Stafford stood before reporters and delivered perhaps the most sobering assessment of a season that has gone terribly wrong.

“We are what our record is,” Stafford said.

No excuses, no “we should be 5-1,” no rhetoric. Just the cold, harsh reality of a 2-4 football team that is sitting in last place in the NFC West.

The Rams entered 2026 as preseason Super Bowl favorites, loaded with veteran talent and dreaming of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in their own stadium in February. Six weeks later, they’re struggling to beat teams that entered the weekend with one victory.

Stafford had nearly rescued the Rams again, engineering a desperate fourth-quarter touchdown drive that culminated in a 6-yard scoring pass to Colby Parkinson. Punter Ethan Evans then converted an improbable extra point, giving Los Angeles a 16-15 lead with 47 seconds remaining.

But Arizona needed only one offensive play to move 36 yards, aided by a controversial 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty against cornerback Josh Wallace. Chad Ryland eventually drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired, handing the Rams their second consecutive walk-off defeat.

For Stafford, the most frustrating part wasn’t the final 47 seconds. It was everything that came before them.

“Football is a game of execution when you boil things down to it,” Stafford said. “Can you go out there and can you make the plays? Can you do the right thing over and over and over again? And that’s what it boils down to in this league. And we’re just not doing that on a consistent enough basis right now.”

That inconsistency has become the defining characteristic of McVay’s team.

The Rams can look unstoppable when Stafford operates with urgency, particularly in two-minute situations. But for long stretches Sunday, their offense looked disjointed, overwhelmed by Arizona’s defensive disguises and incapable of sustaining momentum.

Nacua, whose infectious enthusiasm has become part of the Rams’ identity, sounded unusually subdued afterward.

“That’s obviously not what we wanna put out there,” Nacua said when asked about the team’s flat energy. “I know being a vocal leader, especially on game day, and the attitude and excitement I feel like I know that this game of football brings to me, I can do a better job of being a light on the football field.”

It was a revealing admission from a player who usually approaches football with the unbridled enthusiasm of a kid opening presents on Christmas morning.

Nacua wasn’t blaming the coaches, the quarterback or his teammates. He was looking inward, acknowledging that even his own leadership hadn’t been good enough.

“I know on my part, some of the plays that he puts up there, obviously not every play is gonna be ideal picture, but being able to give him the best, most decisive decision on our timing and rhythm,” Nacua said. “And then there’s some of the ones he’s putting up there, I gotta be able to come down with that.”

The frustration extended throughout the locker room.

Coach Sean McVay opened his postgame press conference with a damning declaration: “We won’t win a game unless we figure out how to not beat ourselves.”

Running back Kyren Williams, asked about the team’s inability to sustain energy between possessions, offered a pointed response, saying he didn’t know because he “wasn’t out there.”

Whether that was intended as criticism of the coaching staff or simply an expression of frustration, it reflected a team searching for answers.

Stafford, however, rejected the suggestion that preseason Super Bowl hype had gotten into the Rams’ heads.

“No, I don’t. Not at all,” he said. “We understand how difficult it is to win games in this league.”

And perhaps that’s the most humbling realization of all.

The Rams have spent six weeks talking about their potential, their talent and their championship standard. But potential doesn’t erase turnovers, talent doesn’t excuse penalties, and championship expectations don’t mean much when a team repeatedly fails to execute.

“We’ve got to obviously try to find a way to be better,” Stafford said.

Nacua was equally candid.

“Humbling, yeah, that’s definitely where we’re at right now.”

The Rams still have 11 games remaining, enough time to rescue their season if they can finally correct the mistakes that have become their weekly calling card.

But after another devastating loss, Stafford and Nacua weren’t selling hope or promising a turnaround. They were confronting the grim reality that things in Los Angeles look a whole lot uglier right now than anyone could have ever imagined before the season started.
