Farmers and representatives of various agricultural organisations have urged the State government to implement the Pandiyar–Moyar river-linking project, which has been under discussion for the past 60 years, and initiate talks with the Kerala government to expedite its implementation.
At a farmers’ awareness meeting organised by the Pandiyar–Moyar Orunginaippu Iyakkam at Avalpoondurai near Erode on Sunday (October 11, 2026), the participants highlighted the importance of the project in meeting the drinking water needs of the Kongu region, comprising Erode, Tiruppur, Karur and Coimbatore districts, and safeguarding the irrigation requirements of the Lower Bhavani, Kodiveri and Kalingarayan irrigation systems.
Senior farmers’ union leader Venkatachalam presided over the meeting. Movement coordinator Karthikeyan and co-organiser B.C. Sengottaiyan were among those present.
Representatives of various agricultural organisations explained the need for the project and called upon the government to take steps to implement it at the earliest by holding discussions with the Kerala government. The participants also urged the authorities to protect the environment and prevent industries from discharging dyeing effluents into water bodies, ponds, rivers and irrigation canals, which could pollute water sources. The meeting adopted a resolution seeking a complete ban on plastic carry bags and single-use plastic products, including straws. It called for the widespread use of jute bags and biodegradable paper bags as alternatives to plastic.
More than 300 members of various organisations participated in the meeting.
