IMPHAL, Oct 14 : Well-armed Kuki militants launched a bomb and gun attack on Makui Naga village along the Imphal- Tamei road in Kangpokpi district this afternoon, using sophisticated weapons.
The Makui Village Authority (MVA) alleged that the attack was carried out by KNF-P and KRA operating under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact and KNA-B which is based in Myanmar.
According to sources, the attack began at around 3.40 pm and continued till late into the evening.
There were no reports of injuries among the villagers during the attack.
Naga village guards retaliated by firing towards the Kuki militants and prevented them from advancing towards the village, sources said.
State and Central security forces deployed in nearby areas rushed to the spot soon after the attack to assess the situation and bring it under control.
The situation in the area remained tense at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Makui Village Authority (MVA) has condemned the attack on the "innocent villagers while they were engaged in social work below the village main gate".
The Village Authority, in a press note, said that the attackers fired automatic weapons from Chaljang and Louthang areas.
This act of violence against unarmed villagers is utterly unacceptable, it said and urged the Centre, the State Government and all relevant authorities to intervene immediately and ensure the safety of the civilians.
Saying that the lives of Makui civilians are at risk, the MVA demanded a thorough investigation and strict legal action against KNF-P, KRA and KNA-B.
"We demand immediate protection, accountability and justice for Makui village", it said and added that the authorities must act decisively before more innocent lives are lost.
