It’s been a rough year in pro hockey for some ex-Oilers d-men, with a number packing in their careers for one reason or another, but one old Oiler is crushing it.

Many — including me — were skeptical when Vincent Desharnais, now 30, signed a four-year deal at $4.2 million with the Washington Capitals, but the early returns have been great for both the Caps and big Desharnais, a massive fan favourite when he was in Edmonton.
Deharnais has three points in eight games, but he leads the team in plus-minus at even strength at +10.

Desharnais, a seventh round Oilers draft pick in 2016, has the fifth most even strength ice-time and the most penalty kill ice-time of any Washington d-man.
When it comes to other old Oilers d-men, however, a number of them either decided to retire or could not get new pro contracts over the summer. Players moving on from pro hockey include Jeff Petry, John Klingberg, Matt Benning, Jordan Oesterle, and Brad Hunt.
A number of old Oilers are again playing in Europe this year, with Joel Persson crushing it for Vaxjo in the Swedish league, putting up 10 points in 10 games so far. Keegan Lowe also plays for Vaxjo.
At the NHL level, it’s still to early to assess how things are working out for Darnell Nurse in San Jose, but Adam Larsson is off to another strong start Seattle, +4 in nine games.
