The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former India cricketer Ramesh Powar to the Men’s Selection Committee following a unanimous recommendation by its Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
The five-member selection panel will be chaired by Pragyan Ojha, with the position determined by seniority based on the number of Test matches played. The committee also includes Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh and Ajay Ratra.
The CAC, comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, conducted interviews with applicants at the BCCI headquarters before recommending Powar for the position.
Powar represented India in two Test matches and 31 One Day Internationals (ODIs) during his international career. After retiring from international cricket, he took up several coaching assignments, including roles with the India women’s team, Mumbai and Gujarat. He has also served as a bowling coach at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
During his tenure as head coach of the India women’s team, Powar guided the side to an Asia Cup title and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.
His appointment comes as the BCCI acknowledges the contribution of former chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who served as chairman of the Men’s Selection Committee from July 2023.
The board credited Agarkar’s tenure with several major achievements for Indian cricket, including three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles and consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games.
In its statement, the BCCI thanked Agarkar for his commitment and contribution to the team’s selection process during his time as chairman.
