Greece’s Pieria Forestry Directorate has won a Silver Award at the Environmental Awards 2026 for its environmental education programmes developed in collaboration with schools, earning recognition among 160 entries.
The directorate received second prize in category 3.1, Organisation Awareness – Environmental Leadership. The category recognises educational institutions, businesses and organisations that implement comprehensive programmes and sustained initiatives to protect the environment, adopt exemplary practices and promote a culture of environmental responsibility.
The Environmental Awards recognise initiatives, projects and innovations that advance environmental protection and sustainable development.
After identifying that many children had little meaningful contact with forests, the Pieria Forestry Directorate developed an interactive environmental education programme designed to bring the forest into the classroom and, wherever possible, take students into the forest itself.
Through hands-on activities, original educational games developed by the Forestry Service, aerial photograph interpretation and fieldwork, students explored the benefits of forest ecosystems and the threats they face.
The directorate said the students’ response best captured the programme’s success: “We played and learned.”
The initiative aims to turn knowledge into direct experience and environmental awareness into an everyday attitude, encouraging younger generations to understand and protect Greece’s forest ecosystems.
