3 takeaways after Oklahoma loses to Kentucky

The Oklahoma Sooners fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the SEC in 2026 after losing 21-13 at home to the Kentucky Wildcats. OU led for most of the game on Saturday night in Norman, but the Sooners couldn't get the job done with four turnovers and another offensive disappointment.

Despite the momentum from Oklahoma's improbable win over Texas last week, head coach Brent Venables' team squandered it in a season where they continue to fail to live up to expectations. Instead of building upon a strong performance, the Sooners came home and fell flat on their face. Now, OU's season is essentially over with six games to go.

Saturday was simply a different chapter of the same book for the Sooners under Venables' leadership. Oklahoma has the same issues it has had for the last few seasons, and Venables either can't or won't fix them.

Here are three takeaways after Oklahoma's disappointing loss to Kentucky.

1. The problem is obvious

As has been the case since the start of the 2024 season, one thing is holding the Sooners back. Their pitiful offense gives them such a slim margin for error in any game against a Power Four team that if the defense and special teams don't play flawless football or score touchdowns on their own, it's almost impossible for OU to win. Year after year under Venables, the offense continues to let Oklahoma down.

The Sooners moved the ball better against Kentucky than they have since Week 1. However, OU wasn't able to capitalize with any more than 13 points. Losing the turnover battle four to nothing certainly doesn't help, but the Oklahoma offense just cannot make anything easy on themselves. The perpetually poor and injured offensive line got completely dominated at the end of the game, sealing Oklahoma's fate.

Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was brought to Norman to fix the offense, and it's still extremely broken. Quarterback John Mateer threw three interceptions, with each hindering OU's ability to win the game more than the last. The running game is nonexistent, the passing game is inconsistent at best, and for the third year in a row, the Sooners can't score. It all falls on Arbuckle, the offensive coaching staff, and the offensive players. It also ultimately falls on Venables, since this keeps happening year after year after year under his watch.

2. The defense did its best

For a large portion of Saturday night, Oklahoma's defense did exactly what it needed to do. After Kentucky's opening drive for a touchdown, OU silenced the Wildcats. Then, Mateer's first interception completely changed the game. The 'Cats went right down the field for a score to take the lead on a drive that started on Oklahoma's half of the 50.

Kip Lewis, Owen Heinecke, Peyton Bowen, Taylor Wein, Jayden Jackson, David Stone, Eli Bowen (when healthy) Courtland Guillory, and Reggie Powers III don't deserve what is happening to this team right now. They can execute well drive after drive, but still lose the game at the end because of the offense.

The good news is that Oklahoma has built an extremely strong defense. Even with all that the Sooners lost last year, the defense is still among the nation's best in several categories. The bad news is, you need both sides of the ball to win games in the SEC.

3. "They are who we thought they were"

Oklahoma entered the 2026 season with very high expectations and aspirations. Halfway through the year, OU is a middling .500 team with one crazy win over a Texas team that lost to unranked Florida in Week 7. What was put on display on the field in Norman on Saturday is what Oklahoma is this season, and it's what Oklahoma is under Venables.

It's hard to see what the right direction is for the Sooners. With the season spiraling, it's not crazy to say the offense is coaching and playing for their jobs. Wiping the slate clean with the offensive staff might work, but unless Venables makes systematic changes to the program that allow for offensive success, it's probably not wise to count on that success happening. The talent gap from OU's defense to its offense continues to become a canyon, and Venables and general manager Jim Nagy will surely try their best to address that this offseason.

At the end of the day, the Sooners are what they are under Venables. He can deliver a 10-win season here and there. He can deliver some historic upsets, even in the midst of bad seasons, that are truly remarkable. Along with that, he'll also give you some historically bad years at OU that will make you question everything about the program.

Consistency has eluded him, and at a program like Oklahoma, that isn't good enough.
