Around 30,000 bottles of premium wine worth an estimated €5 million were stolen from a renowned Italian winery over the weekend of 3–4 October, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Corriere della Sera and the Financial Times.
The theft took place at the Santa Cristina cellar in Cortona, Tuscany, central Italy, which belongs to the historic Marchesi Antinori family estate. A spokesperson for the Florence-based winery, which dates back to 1385, confirmed the incident to AFP.
“This is our most important warehouse, where all the bottles arrive before dispatch,” the spokesperson said, explaining that the stolen wine was destined for international markets and was already prepared for shipment.
